Position Overview:

The Process Control Engineer supports current plant operations PLC/SCADA infrastructure, participates in various capital projects in the existing facility, design and commissioning support of new facilities, and various process improvement projects. This position will be responsible for interfacing with stakeholders including, engineering, production, maintenance, utilities, IT, environmental, safety, management, and contractors. The Process Control Engineer will identify and scope new projects, contribute to project teams, track and control project budget, timing, and quality.


Essential Duties:

  • Working within the PLC/SCADA environment to support plant operations
  • Updating and developing new graphics within the SCADA GE iFix HMI
  • Ladder logic, function block and structured text programming in RSLogix
  • Generate new equipment tag IDs within OSI-Soft PI
  • Support Ethernet-based network infrastructure
  • Troubleshooting and installation support of actuated valves, instruments, various process equipment, remote I/O panels, SCADA servers & workstations
  • Drawing generation and oversight of new construction
  • Follow design, project management, and document control standards
  • Specification and design of new control and instrumentation systems
  • Development of project scopes, and maintaining proper communications, schedule, and budget tracking with other supervision and management
  • Design of proper control schemes and strategies, working with process engineers to understand the plant operation requirements
  • Programming of PLC logic along with graphical HMI software
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation and control system problems and resolve by modification or replacement
  • Manage the PI data historian tag list, graphical displays and reporting
  • Assist instrument techs in troubleshooting and setup of equipment
  • Creates and maintains process documentation
  • Maintains I/O lists, control specification documents and instrumentation data sheets
  • Create and maintain control docs, P&ID's, process control procedures, design basis procedures, data sheets, I/O lists, etc.
  • Provides technical training and supervision to operators and process
  • Ongoing Process Improvement efforts
  • Identifies and scopes out large capital project needs
  • Participate in large capital project teams as a sponsor, participant, advisor, or leader
  • Identify and lead small capital projects
  • Identification of production issues and bottlenecks
  • Work with purchasing, vendors, maintenance, contractors, operators, and other team members to complete project
  • Completes any other tasks as needed or as directed by management

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering, or a related field
  • 5-10 years of experience as a process control engineer in a chemical, mining, petroleum or heavy industrial setting
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record are required in order to drive company vehicles on property.

Desired Qualities:

  • Experience programming and troubleshooting PLC systems
  • Experience in purchasing and setting up new control systems and instrumentation systems (PLC with data historian)
  • Experience with a wide range of instrumentation (temperature, pressure, control valves, flowmeters, pH, VFD’s, etc.)
  • Experience with the following unit ops is preferred (reactors, filters, pumps, PLC control systems, wet scrubbers, kilns, dryers, etc.)
  • Solvent Extraction, Chlor-Alkali, or Co-Gen power plant experience is a plus
  • Experience in daily maintenance troubleshooting
  • Experience in process improvements from concept (identification, scoping, design, procurement) to installation
  • Knowledge of Allen Bradley ControlLogix / CompactLogix, RSLogix, RSLinx, RSNetworx for ControlNet, RS Factory Talk, HART communication protocol & instruments, Allen Bradley PanelView Plus, General Electric iFIX, OSI Software – PI (Data Link, ProcessBook, Server, Notifications, etc.), Microsoft SQL Server
  • Knowledge of how to create, read and modify electrical and control diagrams, PFD’s and P&ID’s
  • Production process optimization/tuning experience of closed loop control systems
  • Good written and verbal skills
  • Computer skills should include Microsoft Office suite


The expected pay rate is $120,000 to $160,000. The actual pay rate offered may vary based on multiple factors including, but not limited to experience, knowledge, skills, and/or location.
