INFIRMARY LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE



PAY PLAN: 122- $ 51,474.00 minimum salary



Purpose of Classification

Performs professional work in nursing of assigned infirmary. Duties include assessing patient health and assisting with patient care, verifying data and documenting health history. Positions in this class perform routine nursing and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer questions; and maintain documents and records.


Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.


Interviews patients to obtain health history during classification; follows nursing protocols as directed by medical director; performs classification daily and TB screening test; carries through lab work ordered by physician and follows up on results; transmits abnormal readings to physician.


Obtains vital signs, glucose checks on known diabetics, and blood pressure checks on hypertensive inmates; administers medication via oral or injection according to protocols; follows and adheres to infection control measures.


Performs sick call on all inmates requesting to be seen by medical personnel on daily basis; follows through with the TB reading on clients and refers any positive reactors for x-rays through TB clinic at the jail.


Prepares clinic for physicians or nurse practitioner doing rounds at the facilities; completes medical alerts on inmates as requested by the Sheriff Department, U.S. Marshals Office, and other agencies in timely manner.


Prepares infirmary supplies for sick call on daily basis; maintains medical supply stock at facility, cleans equipment and maintains clinics; disposes of used supplies as indicated; schedules and organizes inmates for outside medical referrals, and follows up with outside Physician's orders.


Establishes and maintains both automated and manual records and files; and performs record retention tasks as dictated by County policy.


Provides assistance and information to employees, managers, vendors, citizens, local businesses, and/or and other interested parties regarding assigned department functions; serves as liaison between supervisors, vendors, and other departments in regards to department policies and activities. Explains policies and procedures.


Additional Functions

Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and one (1) year of vocational nursing school; supplemented by one (1) year of experience performing nursing and/or patient care work in a clinical setting. Current state of Texas license in vocation nursing and CPR certification required. Must have a valid Texas Driver's License.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (20-50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Exposure to damp/wet surfaces, duty conditions, fumes and odors, and infectious diseases.


This is not a Civil Service covered position.
