Job Description

General Summary:

Under limited supervision, is responsible for performing EKGs and initiating 24 hour Holter monitor and 30-day event monitor recordings, obtaining tracings and reporting to the Cardiologist for interpretation. Assists in performing exercise stress tests by preparing the patient, monitoring the patient during the procedure, and documenting events and vital signs. Performs a variety of clerical tasks including: order, schedule and charge reconciliation of exams and procedures. Responsible for maintaining competency and accuracy of the EKG Management system by editing EKG reports, verifying patient demographic information, completing charge and order reconciliation process of EKGs per department practices. Maintains accurate statistical information concerning procedures performed in the department. This role is a member of the Health care team, and has accountability to function within that team to provide patient care according to established standards.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the Manager or Director of Cardiology/Cardiac Catheterization. Requires a limited level of supervision. Functions under the Administrative Director of Cardiology/Cardiac Catheterization, and the Medical Director of the Department of Cardiology.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Some college preferred.
  • Must possess basic computer skills.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and ACLS certification by American Heart Association is required.
  • Minimum six (6) months experience in a clinical support role or on-the-job training is required.
  • Previous cardiology experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge and identification of cardiac rhythm detection is required.

 

Working Conditions

Working in a well-lit environment, occasional in confined areas. Potential for exposure to nuclear radiation, requiring adherence to safety policies including monitoring of radiation badges, Potential for minimal exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observance of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. Expected to work day shift, including weekends and holidays as necessary. Will be exposed to frequent interruptions and occasional crisis situations. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.

 

Physical Requirements

Standing, walking, reaching stretching and bending throughout most of the work day (5-7 hours per day.) Occasional pushing, pulling. Lifting patients (patients may weigh in excess of 200-250 pounds) and pushing wheelchairs (1-2 hours per day) in accordance with Safe Patient Lifting policy. Visual acuity required for reading computer monitors and patient charts. Acute hearing for hearing blood pressures and receiving and delivery of accurate information. Manual dexterity required for assisting with procedures, utilizing computer keyboards.
