The Position: The Baking School Instructor educates and inspires customers by providing an interactive baking experience. The individual in this role is an effective communicator skilled at engaging a diverse group of students of varying skill sets and experience and guides each forward on their unique baking paths. The instructor serves as an ambassador of the brand, a resource for students, and an open source of knowledge and encouragement as they execute ambitious and wide-ranging baking curricula.

The Location: Onsite in Norwich VT.

The Hours: 30 hours per week. Variable shift with at least one weekend day every week.

Pay: $21.42 - $26.52. Individual offers will be based upon a candidate's qualifications.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviews curriculum in preparation for each class to ensure complete understanding of the course objectives, class flow, and baking skills to be covered and shares plan with assistant
  • Possesses familiarity with fundamental baking skills, to include cultural context, scientific underpinnings, and professional processes
  • Provides a superlative student experience through punctuality, strong class leadership and establishing a fun and upbeat atmosphere that exceeds customer expectation
  • Presents a poised professional appearance, maintaining positive outlook and calm confidence
  • Functions as an ambassador of the King Arthur Baking brand
  • Teaches to a variety of student skills and knowledge levels and leads an effective class experience by actively problem solving and adjusting schedule in order to meet student needs
  • Gives individualized attention to the students, checking in with them as they work, correcting technique and troubleshooting product where necessary
  • Answers questions, utilizing multiple teaching techniques and approaches to speak to different learning styles, levels of experience, age ranges and personality types
  • Utilizes their broad expertise of baking fundamentals and applies it in varied circumstances, including demonstration.
  • Assesses and qualitatively evaluates baked goods against benchmark, including appearance, flavor, and texture
  • Is a committed team member, willing to provide support, training, and feedback to achieve team and individual improvement goals
  • Seeks feedback, practice, and new information to support continual individual development
  • Stays current with company and team communications and supports school standards and policies

Minimum job requirements

  • Culinary degree or comparable professional experience required
  • Minimum 4 years baking experience.
  • Minimum 2 years classroom experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to work well on a team
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Creativity, flexibility, and ability to work well under pressure to accommodate a wide range of needs
  • Excellent customer service skills

Physical requirements/work environment

  • Physical requirements
    1. This is a physically demanding role, requiring standing, walking, and frequent lifting for up to 10 hours a day
    2. Must be able to lift 50 pounds
    3. Must be able to operate classroom equipment, including ovens and large mixers
  • Work environment
    1. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where temperatures can range from 50°ree;F - 90°ree;F depending on location such as in classroom, dish room, outdoors at the wood-fired oven. Instructors work in the classroom, dish room, or outdoors at the wood-fired oven.
