Located in Silver Bay, New York in the Adirondacks on the shores of Lake George, Silver Bay YMCA is 700 acres of endless possibilities and opportunities. Founded over 100 years ago, Silver Bay YMCA is a mission-driven Conference and Family Retreat Center that serves 800 people per week during the summer season. Silver Bay YMCA offers a variety of programmatic activities to their guests and members including swimming, boating, fitness classes, indoor climbing, tennis, pickleball, archery, basketball, beach volleyball, hiking, lectures, string quartet concerts, and a craft studio.

CLASSIFICATION: Seasonal/Non-Exempt


SALARY: $18.89-$26.47


POSITION SUMMARY: This position involves the direct supervision and training of all lifeguards and swim instructors. The Waterfront Team Leader is responsible for ensuring that all state laws and other measures contribute to the safety of Silver Bay guests and a quality swim lesson experience.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 15-20 Seasonal Staff


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Lifeguard Supervision
    1. The Waterfront Team Leader is expected to maintain the beach area according to New York State standards.
    2. The Waterfront Team Leader is responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of all beaches, including raking sand and lawn, trash removal, cleaning the rafts, etc… The team leader should complete a maintenance request form for all major issues.
    3. The Waterfront Team Leader is expected to continue to maintain an adequate rotation system for the lifeguards and assign work schedules. This includes implementing a sufficient policy to guarantee that a lifeguard is present at all advertised scheduled times.
    4. The Waterfront Team Leader is responsible for designing an ongoing training program for lifeguards, including conditioning and review of lifeguard skills (i.e., use of rescue tube, backboard, rescue board, escapes, and emergency drills). All lifeguards should be familiar with a mask, fins, and snorkel in case they need to be used for a deep water search and rescue. Lifeguards should know the meaning of the “red flag” and when it should be flown.
    5. Executing conditioning drills for all lifeguards on shift to participate in daily.
    6. The state requires us to maintain daily attendance records for those using the beach. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that the lifeguards on duty fill out these forms accurately.
    7. Equipment should be checked weekly. This includes rafts, stands, rescue tubes, and first aid supplies. A check sheet should be submitted to the Program Director weekly.
  2. Swim Lesson Supervision
    1. Oversees daily swim lessons while working with maintains records, including attendance records, and ensures all participants are registered and lesson plans are complete.
    2. Trains swim instructors to provide YMCA Swim Lessons, including weekly meetings and ongoing training.
    3. Works with the Day Camp Director or designee to uphold all State Regulations, including buddy board checks, and maintains ratios.
  3. Any other duties as assigned.
  4. As a 24-hour operation, all staff may be asked to work weekend, evening, or night shifts and/or holidays in order to serve our members, guests, and program participants.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Must be at least 21 years of age

· Must hold current

o YMCA Lifeguard, Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard or equivalent,

o Professional Rescuer CPR and First Aid Certifications,

o YMCA Progressive or Red Cross WSI Swimming Instructor

o Must have Red Cross Lifeguard Management or equivalent

· Must have two seasons of previous experience consisting of at least 12 weeks as a children’s camp lifeguard, with more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time, or at least 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard.

· Must be a mature person who can assume high accountability due to the impending danger, risk, and attraction of the water environment to the guests.

· Strong leadership skills are essential in this position.

· Excellent customer service skills and the ability to enforce rules in a professional and positive manner.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Must be a skilled swimmer and able to pull weight through the water.

· Must be physically able to rescue someone drowning or injured in the water.

· Prolonged periods of being outdoors
