Job Description

Estimating duties includes preparation of complete estimates from bidding plans and specifications, for multiple projects. Must prepare detailed estimate updates as the design evolves, including preparing variance summaries between estimates. Must have knowledge and understanding of unit costs and the factors that affect construction cost. Ability to prepare detailed instructions to bidders, trade specific clarifications and comprehensive bid packages. Ability to prepare detailed scope review documents in preparation for subcontract negotiation. Report directly to company executive management. Position requires periodic travel to various construction projects in the Southeast region.

Must be detail-oriented with experience as a heavy civil construction estimator. Must have demonstrated experience, knowledge, and skills utilizing strategic planning, risk management and disciplined construction operations management. Must have the ability to establish professional, trusting, and meaningful relationships with the entire projects team, from project managers and administration professionals to field level crews, as well as external project partners such as contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers.

Essential Duties of the Position:

  • Define project tasks and required resources.
  • Develop project packages and develop trade partner agreements to fulfill division objectives.
  • Build and maintain trusting and transparent owner, project management, and trade partner relationships.
  • Work with Operations and Field Supervision to make the transition/handoff from Estimating to Operations upon project award.
  • Understand quantity updating and work with Superintendents to maintain accurate project labor forecasts.
  • Manage trade partners, subcontractors, material suppliers and other related pre-construction partners.
  • Assist the Project Manager to create schedule and project timelines.
  • Create staging, logistics, and phasing plan for project.
  • Negotiate agreements with trade partners, vendors, and suppliers in a timely manner.
  • Assist in development, planning, and updating of overall project schedule.
  • Help define project scope, goals, and deliverables (Conditions of Satisfaction).
  • Assist operations in material procurement.
  • Assist with purchase orders, project insurance and bonding obligations.
  • Recognize significant risk issues and review with executive management.
  • Implement and manage change when necessary to meet project outputs.
  • Participate actively in corporate performance standards evaluations, demonstrate awareness of self-development needs, and strive to achieve individual and team performance goals
  • Provide guidance and assistance to team members; provide support on projects requiring multiple estimators by dividing the responsibility in producing the estimate
  • Evaluate and interpret all contract documents.
  • Evaluate and assess result of project.



Minimum Requirements:

  • 10 Years Heavy Civil Construction Project Management/Estimating experience required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or another similar field preferred
  • Excellent computer skills in all Microsoft Office Programs; working knowledge of HCSS preferred; working knowledge of AGTEK preferred; working knowledge of other types of Project Management software preferred.
  • Ability to calculate figures & amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, & volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra & geometry.
  • Ability to use basic reasoning and to resolve issues quickly with little or no direction, to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, schedule format, good negotiating skills, and to make good judgments & decisions.
  • OSHA 10 Hour certification preferred. If not current, must receive within first year of employment & keep current.
  • Knowledge and experience with of all facets Heavy Civil Construction projects.
  • Ability to manage Heavy Civil Construction projects up to $15M.
  • Advanced blueprint reading ability.
  • Advanced Knowledge of industry safety procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of estimation, pre-construction, and all phases of a heavy civil construction project.
