Job Summary:

Oversees all aspects of the Vehicle Maintenance Department including staffing, maintenance, repair and safety of all equipment and vehicles, safety of the shop yard, and safe use of the fuel system.

 

Job Responsibilities, not necessarily in order of priority, include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  •  Provides excellent customer service to customers and business partners.
  • Recruits, hires, trains and directs staff assigned to vehicle/equipment repair and maintenance 

  • May assist with preparation and administration of annual operating and capital improvement budget for assigned area of responsibility; monitors and controls expenses.

  • Maintain accurate records of all expenses and equipment maintenance work.

  • Maintain up to date records to reflect yearly budget guidelines.

  • Ensure that the vehicle maintenance shop is safe for all staff.

  • Understand and enforce safety regulations. Conduct weekly safety meetings.

  • Assist and direct the vehicle maintenance staff.

  • Ensure all employees are working safely, efficiently, and as a team.

  • Maintain a smooth working relationship with other department managers to ensure proper maintenance of all Kirkwood vehicles.

  • Order parts, materials, and supplies at the best price and quality available.

  • Order and maintain adequate fuel, oil, parts, and materials for Kirkwood vehicles.

  • Maintain all equipment to safe and legal standards.

  • Notify the Director of Mountain Operations on any upcoming costs that are unexpected or unbudgeted.

  • Communicate all issues and concerns with the Director of Mountain Operations. 

  • Maintains computerized fleet maintenance program for vehicle/equipment management and record keeping system; tracks repair history, maintenance costs and generates associated reports.

  • Supervises preventive maintenance and repair activities, including welding and metal fabrication.

  • May make presentations to the Director of Mountain Operations and the General Manager on proposed vehicle and equipment purchases.

  • Disposes of company vehicles and equipment once it has exceeded its useful life, utilizing methods including auction, sealed bids, consignment, etc.

  • Follows safety procedures and guidelines.

  • Inputs and/or monitors employee time & pay records (including tips) using an automated system. Ensures records are accurate each pay period.

  • Assists with special projects and performs other duties as assigned from time to time.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises up to 8 employees in the Vehicle Maintenance Department.  Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience

At least five years experience in repair of a variety of automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, and miscellaneous equipment; including at least one year of experience in a management position, and completion of two-year mechanic trade school; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Knowledge of all applicable state and federal vehicle regulations and safety requirements in required.

 

Comprehension/Communication Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, instruction manuals, technical specifications or government regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, managers, suppliers, customers, the general  public and the Director of Mountain Operations and the General Manager. The duties and responsibilities of this position may necessitate the use of a cellular phone for business reasons.

 

Effective communication skills required to participate in peer evaluations and feedback processes used in all aspects of work environment (i.e., staff meetings, training, merit increases, evaluations, disciplinary actions, etc.)

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

Certifications/Licensing/Registrations

Diplomas and/or Certificates related to automotive repair are preferred. 

Valid California Driver's License or equivalent

 

Other Skills

Ability to work in a self-directed work environment.  Must be self-motivated and show a high level of initiative.  Must be available for and able to evaluate emergency callouts relating to motorized equipment.  Excellent organizational, administrative, analytical and customer service skills; computer skills for applications including word processing, spreadsheets, maintenance management and financial accounting management.  Ability to train staff and develop and 

maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of individuals and groups; ability to deal with changing circumstances in a positive manner; and  ability to work a schedule which includes weekends and holidays.

The expected pay range is $67,500 - $83,730 + annual bonus. This is the pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
