EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I OR II

OPEN: MARCH 27TH CLOSES: APRIL 26TH AT 5:00PM

PAY: $19.55 - $27.50

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, operates a variety of heavy, power-driven equipment, and performs semi-skilled and skilled public works maintenance duties.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Operates a backhoe, tractor, grader, large trucks, loader, mixers, rollers, and other heavy, motorized equipment;
  • Performs equipment operation duties in the maintenance and construction of public works projects, including streets, utilities, parking lots, parks;
  • Cleans and makes minor repairs to equipment;
  • Performs preventative maintenance to equipment;
  • Performs heavy, semi-skilled, and skilled construction and maintenance duties of a Maintenance Worker as part of a work crew, when not performing equipment operation duties;

EXAMPLES OF NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Performs other related work as required.

SUPERVISION: This position works under the direct supervision of a Lead Person and under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works and/or Utilities Director. This position may have supervisory responsibilities for a work crew when assigned as a Lead Person.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:

Essential duties require the following physical, mental, environmental and communication demands:

Physical: Frequent walking, stooping, standing, bending, climbing or balancing, kneeling, heavy lifting, carrying, reaching, handling, and digging. Sufficient dexterity to grasp and use hand tools and power driven construction tools and equipment; and operate heavy motorized vehicles and equipment.

Mental: Ability to apply good judgment and practical knowledge to resolve routine problems in the area of work assigned.

Environmental: Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions; travel between work sites is necessary; work is regularly performed near moving mechanical equipment; may be exposed to dirt, dust, noise, fumes and airborne particles.

Communication:

Vision – Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, to review written instructions and directions; to safely operate heavy vehicles and equipment; and to observe potential hazards and prevent accidents while operating equipment.

Hearing – Sufficient clarity of hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to maintain two-way communications in person, on the telephone, or by radio.Speech - Sufficient clarity of speech or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to communicate verbally in a clear and concise manner with the public, supervisors, and co-workers.

Writing – Sufficient to keep routine records and timesheets.

Reading – Sufficient to read and comprehend written instructions and directions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: As Equipment Operator I – One year experience in construction or utility maintenance work, which includes skilled equipment operation experience.

As Equipment Operator II – Three years of increasingly responsible experience in construction or utility maintenance work, which includes skilled equipment operation experience.

Knowledge of:

  • General construction and utility maintenance materials, procedures, and equipment, with particular reference to municipal public works;
  • Operation and general maintenance of heavy power equipment, including graders, backhoes, tractors with various attachments, large trucks, mixers, loaders, rollers, and other related equipment;
  • Safety precautions necessary in working with heavy motorized equipment and related tools;

Ability to:

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Work after hours and on weekends;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Clean and care for assigned equipment;
  • Proficiently operate a variety of heavy power driven construction equipment;
  • Excavate to line and grade;
  • Perform skilled maintenance and construction work;

Certifications:

For Equipment Operator I – Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a California Water Distribution Operator Grade D-1 certificate within 18 months from date of hire.

For Equipment Operator II – Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a California Water Distribution Operator Grade D-2 certificate within 18 months from date of hire.

License:

Possession of a valid California Operator’s License issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles or equivalent if a resident of another state. Must have and maintain a license which is insurable under current City insurance policies as part of a work crew, when not performing equipment operation duties.
