JOB TITLE: Bus Driver/Maintenance

PROGRAM: Migrant & Seasonal Head Start

JOB STATUS: _____ Exempt __X__ Non-Exempt

STATEMENT OF THE JOB: Under the overall supervision of the Early Childhood Director and the direct supervision of the Center Manager. Carries out all duties and responsibilities as related to the transportation of children.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintain a professional attitude with staff, parents, volunteers, and children at all times.

Assist in creating a warm and welcoming environment that supports children’s growth and development.

Work with the Center Manager in designing bus routes. Drive bus on designated morning & afternoon routes five days per week.

Responsible for seeing children board and leave the bus in a safe manner.

Responsible for seeing that children are returned to parent or other authorized adult according to their emergency contact form.

Responsible for seeing children are seated safely.

Responsible for seeing buses are in good operating condition at all times and for reporting any problems to their direct supervisor.

Maintain their assigned vehicle and ensure that appropriate safety inspections have been completed for its operation as required by state laws.

Responsible for the maintenance of buildings, grounds and bus(es) in a professional and timely manner, including, but not limited to:

  • changing air filters in HVAC units
  • monthly fire extinguisher checks
  • watering, mowing, trimming and weed-eating
  • seeing that buses are in good operating condition at all time and for reporting any problems to the direct supervisor
  • Clean and safe environment inside and outside the bus through regular cleaning.

Responsible for keeping buses clean and waxed.

Responsible for assisting in the maintenance of center facilities and vehicles.

Participate in the required Random Drug and Alcohol Testing for Bus Drivers.

Assist in obtaining and documenting In-Kind (Non-Federal Match) for parent and community activities.

Maintain accurate records regarding their bus and children who are being transported.

Collaborate with the Bus Monitor to teach children safe riding practices and safety procedures on and off the bus.

Assist in the avoidance or appearance of fraud and insurance of compliance in designated areas.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Respect confidentiality in all aspects of the Head Start Program.
  2. Must be willing to participate in all training designed for professional development.
  3. Able to handle stress, tension and exasperation that contact with many children and adults may bring every day.
  4. May be called upon to administer first aid to children or staff at any time in the program. The incidental nature of this circumstance effectively establishes first aid as a collateral duty, rather than a primary one.
  5. Perform other job-related duties as necessary for the overall operation of the program.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Experience Requirements:

  • Three months experience driving a bus or similar size vehicle.
  • Must have a good driving record.
  • Basic computer skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be at least 25 years of age.
  • Have a valid commercial driver’s license with a school bus endorsement or be capable of obtaining a commercial driver’s license with a school bus endorsement.
  • Must be able to pass tuberculosis screening annually.
  • Successfully pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam prior to employment and annually thereafter.
  • Successfully pass a drug screening prior to employment.
  • Successfully complete a Bus Driver Road Test.
  • Have access to transportation with liability insurance and willing to use vehicle for Agency related travel.
  • Must be able to travel out of area overnight to attend training.
  • Able to hear and communicate orally with children and adults.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Skill Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations.

Personal Traits:

  • Be in sympathy with the concepts of the Head Start Program.
  • Able to keep confidential information without inappropriately divulging it.
  • Able to make decisions and work without continual close supervision.

Salary: Range 16.50

Receive a $1000.00 Bus Driver (CDL) or Van Driver $500.00 New Hire Incentive following a satisfactory 90-day job performance review.

Currently budgeted for 10 months

Start Date: ASAP

Hours: Full-Time/Non-Exempt position, Mon.-Fri. Work hours vary depending on location of children. Currently split shift 5:45am-9:45am and return 1pm to 5pm. On days when children are not present hours are 7:30am-4:00pm with a thirty minute lunch.
