The Health & Safety Specialist will assist in the preparation and training related to health and safety of mine personnel with a primary emphasis on MSHA/Cal-OSHA new miner, annual refresher, site specific, and emergency response. The Health and Safety Specialist helps train workers in safety procedures and requirements, monitor working conditions, and ensure proper procedures are in place and being followed. The Health & Safety Specialist also takes an active role in the facilities emergency response plans by assisting in developing, inspecting, and auditing emergency procedures and coordinating response actions to deal with hazards and emergencies.


Under the supervision of the EHS Manager, the Health and Safety specialist identifies, reports, and recommends corrective action for a wide variety of workplace industrial hygiene factors that may impact employee safety, health, and productivity at the mine.


Salary: The expected pay rate is $85,000 per year. The actual pay rate offered may vary based on multiple factors including, but not limited to experience, knowledge, skills, and/or location.

Essential Duties:
  • Monitors, assesses, and resolves health and safety issues in the work environment.
  • Identifies and evaluates chemical and biological dangers such as air quality, ergonomic challenges, water, or dangerous sound levels.
  • Completes routine site wide inspections to remain in compliance with regulations.
  • Evaluates proposed process modifications, additions, and changes to identify potential safety concerns and recommends appropriate safeguards.
  • Ensure that contractor personnel working on the property work in compliance with MP Materials policies and safety requirements.
  • Assist site champions as needed in development, roll out and updating SOPs as needed.
  • Provide advice, assist, and audit procedures to ensure overall effectiveness.
  • Ensure inspections by regulatory agencies are coordinated and deficiencies corrected.
  • Review accidents and incidents for completeness with findings and corrective actions.
  • Maintain filing systems regarding worker training and safety.
  • Assist with field activities by conducting plant inspections and audits and providing training to employees and contractors on hazard recognition, unsafe acts and conditions and regulatory compliance with MSHA and Cal OSHA.
Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years’ experience in a Health and Safety role.
  • Certified MSHA Trainer or ability to obtain in sort order.
  • Certified First Aid/CPR/AED Trainer.

Other Functions:

  • Serve as an alternate point of contact for MSHA, Cal-OSHA and local response agencies.
  • Assist with the care and provision of medical services to injured employees.
  • Conduct detailed exposure assessment, analyses of operational procedures, equipment, and materials.
  • Prepare accurate and complete technical reports of survey findings and provide recommendations on how to correct hazardous conditions.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of MP Materials Safety & Loss Control policies and procedures, MSHA and Cal OSHA regulations, and other pertinent regulations and standards.
  • Work with the facility management team to ensure compliance with MP Materials policies, MSHA, Cal OSHA and other regulations.
