Description:

The Meat Cutter is responsible for cutting and wrapping meat, poultry, and seafood in accordance with department expectations. The Meat Cutter follows all food safety and Co-op policies in performing these duties. The Meat Cutter works closely with the Meat Department Manager to ensure that product is ordered and received, cut correctly to minimize shrink, and wrapped for retail readiness while upholding sanitation standards.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Preparing raw meat for cutting and wrapping

  • Ensures that all meat, poultry, and seafood is cut and wrapped with minimal shrink
  • Follows all safety and sanitation procedures
  • Cuts and prepares meat to ensure adequate product to stock and sell
  • Works with Meat Department Manager to determine profitable product mix

Inventory

  • Assists in ordering and oversees receiving of product within department’s budget
  • Constant awareness of expiration dates and best practices for reducing food waste
  • Consistently evaluates department shrink to meet goals set forth by management

Customer service

  • Provides excellent customer service by assisting customers in finding what they are looking for
  • Dynamically sells products by providing customers with information to make good product-related decisions
  • Demonstrates outgoing and friendly behavior and an ability to interact with different types of customers
  • Interacts with customers positively all the time, including taking preorders, showing them products elsewhere in the store, etc

Food safety and handling

  • Meets all food safety guidelines set forth by management and the state
  • Performs routine sanitation of all equipment and retail cases
  • Ensures all food is consistently kept at appropriate temperatures
  • Follows policies on personal hygiene and dress code

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS (knowledge, skills, and abilities)

Preferred:

  • Experience with different types of cuts and different types of meats
  • Knowledge of food safety guidelines
  • Experience working in cold environments

Minimum:

  • Retail Grocery Experience
  • Knife skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT (in a usual workday)

This position stands, bends, and lifts up to 8 hours per day. This position works in a cold, damp, and occasionally subfreezing environment. This position requires ability to work with sanitation equipment and chemicals. Frequent walking and climbing up and down stairs is necessary. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
