JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

As an incoming team member of the Office of Physical Plant, it will be expected that all employees embody and model Penn State's and Finance and Business's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Perform assigned piping repairs and installations on all distribution systems, including high pressure steam, medium pressure steam, low pressure steam, water, gas, air, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, chlorine systems, condensate systems, chemical injection systems, effluent line systems, etc.
  • Operate various types of hand and power tools to cut, thread, bend, and join pipe
  • Operate water tapping equipment, gas tapping equipment, and air tapping equipment to perform taps with systems under pressure
  • Operate acetylene torch for removal of old abandoned lines and old support brackets to facilitate repairs
  • Plan and layout the installation of taps for by-passes, connections, and isolation of systems for repair of leaks
  • Operate various types of equipment for the inspection and location of distribution systems using safety procedures; metal detectors, line detector, leak detector, O2 analyzer, gas analyzer, wet bulb thermometer, heat spy, etc.
  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, sketches, and work orders; plan and layout work in proper sequence, assuring top quality work in all aspects
  • Draw sketches of piping for updating and correction of utility map
  • Detect unusual conditions and defective materials and report to supervisor
  • Perform inspections, maintenance, security, safety, and housekeeping programs on tunnels, manholes, valves, meter boxes, septic tanks, cesspools, chlorine houses, sewage pumping stations, wells and distribution storage areas
  • Install, repair, and maintain a wide variety of piping components, including, but not limited to, valves, expansion joints, reducing stations, control systems for reducing stations, sewage pump control systems, chlorine system control, etc.
  • Install, repair, and maintain all types of piping materials and components used on campus distribution system including, but not limited to, PVC, copper, steel, cast iron, terra cotta, transite, fibre glass, etc.
  • Direct, in safe manner, the operation of the back hoe and other equipment in the uncovering of various systems for repair, maintenance and installation
  • Ensure excavations are properly safeguarded by barricades and shoring while work is in progress
  • Direct proper back-filling of excavations for the protection of the systems and foundations of various ground covers
  • Answer questions for and/or direct the work of apprentices, and/or lower grade employees as required
  • Operate motor vehicles as required


Job Requirements: Requires the use of shop mathematics together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, various types of adjustable measuring instruments and the training generally applicable in a particular or specialized occupation. Equivalent to 1 to 3 years applied trades training. Must possess PA DEP Drinking Water Operator Class E Distribution Certification. Over 1 up to and including 3 years of effective experience.

Work Schedule: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Days Off: Saturday, Sunday
