Writing Mentors - 2 Positions

Summary/Objective of Position:

These are the two hired student interns that need to be hired to begin the Writing Mentor Circle Program that includes 2 Learning Specialist. This Spring of 2024, we will pilot the Writing Mentor Circle with 2 student interns, in hopes to start a team that will consist of 5 Learning Specialist, plus a Coordinator for the Leaning Specialists,
Using standard assessment methods, we hope to demonstrate that our efforts mentoring incoming freshman acts as a remediation for prior performance in English 101 & 102.

As an ENG AZ Remedial Intern, here are our responsibilities:

•Attend Instructors' Zoom classes and assist students as needed.
•Review all instructor materials related to an assignment.
•Work with students on all stages of the writing and composing process: brainstorming, outlining, drafting, researching, and revising their texts for ENG 101 and 102
•Help students obtain course materials from our bookstore.
•Help students learn how to use MS Word and PowerPoint and OneDrive
•Help students understand how to participate in adaptive A.I.-based homework platforms such as Grammarly and ChatGPT.
◦Some students need help learning how to learn from these A.I. based learning platforms.
◦A.I. based learning changes how student orient towards academic writing
•Help students understand the relationship between Dine Educational Philosophy (DEP) and good study habits.
◦These relationships include how to use the A.I. based learning platform
◦These relationships include the elements of DEP {Think, Plan, Live, Assure}
•Help students write Student Concept Narratives (SCN) about college-level mathematical concepts.
◦SCN involve academic writing across the disciplines
•Help students become self-directed in academic efforts
◦Becoming self-directed is one of our Gen Ed SLO (Student Learning Outcomes)

Our Learning Specialists assist individual students using email, Zoom, phone, and in-person meetings.
It is estimated that each Writing Learning Specialist will help between 20 students per semester.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience


Minimum:

Must have completed ENG 101 & 102 earning an "A" letter grade.

Knowledge:

Knowledge of academic writing conventions, genres, and citation formats.

Skills:

Microsoft Office, Blackboard, Zoom, navigating academic library databases.

Abilities:

Ability to work well with others and be independently directed.
Ability to effectively communicate in professional supportive manner.
Ability to be highly organized, including: schedule and manage multiple appointments with students, faculty and other support staff.
Ability to keep accurate records and data.
