JOB TITLE: Camp Nurse

JOB LOCATION: Timber Pointe Outdoor Center, 20 Timber Pointe Lane, Hudson, IL 61748

JOB STATUS: Seasonal/Temporary



Position Objective:

Easterseals’ Timber Pointe Outdoor Center is looking for healthcare heroes to join us in providing life-changing, empowering, and safe camp experiences for individuals of all ability levels at our beautiful 170-acre lakeside property! The Camp Nurse is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff and providing health care to meet the individual needs of campers and camp staff. The camper population includes day campers (youth ages 5-17 with or without disabilities), overnight youth campers (ages 7-17 with disabilities and/or challenging illnesses), and adult overnight campers (ages 18+ with disabilities and/or challenging illnesses).

Employment Dates and Position Pay:

The Camp Nurse is scheduled on the Sundays in which campers and staff check-in for a camp session from about 2:30 until 6:30pm. The employment dates are as follows:

  • June 2nd
  • June 16th
  • June 23rd
  • July 30th
  • July 7th
  • July 21st
  • August 4th

The Camp Nurse is compensated at an hourly rate of $23.00 when working Sunday Check-in days.

The Camp Nurse will also have the ability to work full camp sessions if available. The Camp Session dates available:

  • July 7th – 12th
  • July 21st – 26th
  • August 4th – 9th

If the Camp Check-in Nurse works a full camp session, the position with be compensated with a weekly stipend of $900/camp session and are provided with room/board/meals during their time at camp.

Job Functions for Sunday Check-Ins:

  • Screen all campers and staff who are arriving to camp.
  • Verify Health history and examination.
  • Verify emergency authorization.
  • Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases.
  • Conduct a health assessment.
  • Keep all medications used by campers and staff.
  • Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Functions for Full Camp Sessions:

  • Provide health care to meet the individual needs of camp staff and campers with thoughtfulness, kindness, and respect, administering all treatments and medications to the camp population per prescription requirements or OTC as needed.
  • Collaborate with other staff to meet medical needs.
  • Maintain communication with camper families as needed.
  • Follow healthcare policies/procedures as described in the Healthcare Manual and treatment procedures.
  • Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.
  • Set up the camp Health Center.
  • Inventory and order all necessary medical supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state and American Camp Association Standards.
  • Prepare and utilize daily medical logs for treatment and medications.
  • Prepare and record incident and accident report forms.
  • Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.
  • Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp, including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, waterfront, activity areas, and out-of-camp trips.
  • Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.
  • Screen all campers and staff who are arriving and departing camp.
  • Verify Health history and examination.
  • Verify emergency authorization.
  • Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases.
  • Conduct a health assessment.
  • Keep all medications used by campers and staff.
  • Supervise sanitary conditions throughout camp.
  • Observe daily cleanliness in the medical wing and other areas throughout the camp.
  • Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Current state licensure as Registered Nurse / RN.
  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Associate Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program.
  • Valid CPR and First aid certification.
  • Valid Driver's License and reliable transportation.
  • Experience in first aid and emergency management.
  • Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care.

Competency Requirements

  • Desire to work with children and young adults.
  • Community health knowledge.
  • Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters.
  • Ability to use telephone and computer.
  • Ability to maintain a written record system.
  • Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must have visual ability sufficient to read and complete written correspondence, reports, etc., and computer screen information.
  • Regular use of hands to grasp, handle, or feel.
  • Regular standing, walking, sitting, climbing, grabbing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and reaching.
  • Ability to push, pull, lift and/or carry up to fifty (50) pounds or more.
  • Ability to quickly get to remote locations on camp property over uneven terrain (will be provided with a golf cart).
  • Possess endurance to meet emergency needs.

Work Environment

  • Outdoor camp environment with exposure to all types of weather and conditions, including extreme heat, cold, snow, rain, and specific environmental realities (humidity, wind, bugs, lake water, etc.)
  • If staying for a full camp session, reside in a private room.
