Founded in 1866, The Floating Hospital (TFH), is one of the last remaining charity hospitals in New York City. Our commitment is the same as it was more than 150 years ago: unrestricted healthcare to all who walk through our doors, regardless of immigration and insurance status, or the ability to pay. The Floating Hospital welcomes individuals of all ages, from infants, school age children (5+), youth and adults. TFH is a Federally Qualified Health Center and the largest provider to homeless families living in family shelters and domestic violence safe houses throughout all five boroughs. We are looking for a Part-time Optometrist to provide the services below.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Patient Care:

  • Perform thorough routine eye examinations.
  • Identify the patient’s visual alertness, field of vision, and hand-eye coordination.
  • Diagnose sight problems.
  • Prescribe corrective lenses.
  • Diagnose and assess eye disease such as diabetes and liver failure.
  • Write prescriptions and inform patients about medications prescribed.
  • Consult with other physicians and specialists as needed.
  • Complete medical forms and documentation related to patient care.
  • Answer patient telephone inquiries as needed.
  • Make referrals to other agencies and providers, with follow up care provided.
  • Encourage eye health promotion, eye disease prevention, and eye health maintenance. Provide patient advocacy, as appropriate for site.
  • Participate in Peer Review process, as defined by The Floating Hospital.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Administrative/Education Duties:

  • Collaborate with Benefits Counselors and Outreach staff to ensure appropriate patient scheduling and flow.
  • Observe, implement, and promote federal regulations as defined by HIPAA and Policies and Procedures of The Floating Hospital.

Salary: 80k.

Requirements:

Background and Education:


Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited institution; New York State Optometry license; Optometry Board Certification; minimum of two years’ clinical experience preferable; ability to speak Spanish or other languages preferable.
