Job Description

The Laboratory Technical Assistant is a service-oriented individual who is trained on the job for specific technical tasks that are supportive of the laboratory testing process. They possess technical skills and experience sufficient to perform clinical laboratory specimen collection, evaluation, automated testing. They are able to identify testing circumstances that require referral for testing professional review and/or intervention (including hematology, chemistry, special chemistry, urinalysis, and coagulation). The Laboratory Technical Assistant exhibits organizational skills in prioritizing workload and task urgency based on specific knowledge of specimen urgency designation and practices quality management skills to assure appropriate referral for technical review and action by a Testing Professional. The Laboratory Technical Assistant engages in continual learning to advance individual skills and knowledge. This position accepts written and verbal orders for laboratory testing, applies corporate compliance measures, and fulfills acceptable orders. The Laboratory Technical Assistant works under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisors, Coordinators and Testing Professionals.

This position reports to the Laboratory Administrative Director. This position is hourly (non-exempt).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and skills:

  • Demonstrates ability to identify problems and initiate actions for correction.
  • Has desire to obtain skills in limited technical aspects of laboratory operations.
  • Possesses basic computer operation skills. Experience with department specific information systems is desirable.
  • Demonstrates oral and written communication skills.
  • Recognizes problems and seeks assistance.

Education and experience:

  • A High School diploma or equivalent is required; associate degree or baccalaureate degree in a science field is preferred.
  • Two to five years of experience in a clinical laboratory as a phlebotomist is preferred.
  • Progressive experience interacting with large volumes of people each workday required.

Licensure, registration or certification:

  • BLS is required
