Summary

The Claims Manager initial role responsibility is on a US construction site. Please note there is very heavy travel for this role. In consultation with your project management team you are responsible for handling claim related issues following the identification of potential risks, changes and deviations from engineering, equipment delivery, erection & commissioning baselines through to the successful conclusion of negotiations during on site project execution.

What you’ll do

  • Implementing project specific claim procedures, with an emphasis on claim avoidance or quick settlement, preparing for the usual jobsite occurrences bearing in mind home office liaison and coordination will be necessary when required.
  • Identification, documentation and preparation of possibly complex contractual claims and counter-claims with the ability to communicate with project stakeholders’ opposite numbers.
  • Timely notification, when required of possible claims or defend against incoming claims while simultaneously working with project partners to avoid claims where possible.
  • Setting up and compiling the requisite documentation for claim substantiation when necessary and managing the preparation of technical explanations with the assistance of expert mechanical and electrical installation personnel as required.
  • Analysis and assessment of the risks naturally existing in large complex engineering installations from procurement to final plant start up. Setting up procedures to manage those risks.
  • Preparation for and managing claim negotiation procedures providing guidance to the Contract Manager where necessary.
  • Assisting site management with planned Technical Advisor resource expenditure to track potential loss and expense due to external influences and the demands of ever changing schedules.
  • Advising the project team regarding decisions relevant to the form of contract and advising on the inherent risks, and their mitigation, when dealing with contractor installation, commissioning and the requisite Customer interfaces.
  • Maintaining a structured and methodical way of working summarizing large amounts of data to provide effective illustrations supporting tricky commercial discussions and settlements.
  • Support the Contract Manager on all contract related issues as well as assessing the chances of proceeding to negotiation or otherwise.
  • Further developing the existing management tools, databases and systems for risk and claim management using your experience to tweak or adjust to suit best or better practices.

What you’ll need

  • A College degree - Technical, Business or Law and/or minimum 5 to 7 years of work experience in similar function
  • An understanding of the contractual requirements and processes involved in handling alleged extra costs submissions (Domestic and International contracts).
  • Understands the nuances of mechanical, electrical and piping installation and has a general understanding of plant construction, automation, commissioning activities and plant start up.
  • Understands the contractor/subcontractor/sub supplier environment both technically and contractually.
  • Enjoys solving problems by creating solutions.
  • Understands the relationships between time and cost.
  • Proactive attitude and hands-on style of working.
  • Technical ability to quickly recognize who may be responsible for any loss and expense associated with design changes, errors or incoming claims from others whether upstream or downstream.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Working knowledge of SAP, SharePoint and Microsoft Office Suite of products (e.g. Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint)
  • Willingness to travel on business/ to work at the project construction site.
  • Team player, assertive personality, can talk with contractors & suppliers while simultaneously conversing with the Customer by understanding their demands.
