Position Summary

The Database Administrator is responsible for administering and supporting POLYWOOD's Database systems. These systems entail Microsoft SQL, MySQL, and MongoDB instances on-premise and in the cloud. The role includes administration and support of high availability and performance improvement technologies such as Database Clustering, Database Proxy Layers, OS Configuration Management tools, and other tasks or systems as assigned. The IT DBA is responsible for leading the administration of these environments and working with organizational leadership to analyze Database technologies to ensure that industry best practices are implemented and followed. Additionally, the IT DBA is responsible for securing systems and analyzing and monitoring the progressing security landscape of Database spaces, working with IT and IS department leadership to implement countermeasures as necessary.


The IT DBA reports directly to the Director of IT and has the responsibility of advising department leadership on evolving database technologies, as well as assisting the Director of IT in prioritizing initiates for each system. This position requires creating SOPs and counseling peers in executing of those SOPs. This position involves working closely with internal customers to encourage best practices in using and accessing Database environments. The IT DBA will need to assist peers and support teams in the day-to-day service of environments as needed. This position will require partnering with various IT and IS resources to administer connectivity between multiple systems and their databases. A primary responsibility is to ensure maximum uptime and optimal performance of POLYWOOD’s Databases-based server. Responsibilities pertaining to high availability include data integrity of the Database systems, encompassing the maintenance, testing, and maturing of backup processes.


As needed, the IT DBA must work closely with the IS BI, Systems Administration, and Information Systems teams to manage overlapping and shared responsibilities between Database systems, line of business, and infrastructure systems. This includes, but is not limited to the performance of the server environment, DB instances, and query executions. Managing vendor and partner relationships for systems support and administration is a recurring responsibility. The IT DBA must work well within team environments and with organizational leadership to drive innovation and ensure maximum ROI of new and existing Database systems.


Requirements:

The IT Database Administrator must be self-driven, focused, and goal-oriented in successfully executing projects and day-to-day responsibilities. Critical thinking under pressure and advanced troubleshooting are components of the day-to-day workload, and a proven history of these skill sets is necessary. Historical demonstration of strong interpersonal communication is necessary where shared responsibility for complex environments exists.


Deep knowledge of network concepts, command line execution, scripting, operating system components, data serialization languages, programming concepts, and data management are necessary. Thorough comprehension of corresponding protocols and languages such as, TCP/IP, DNS, BASH, Powershell, T-SQL, SQL, etc. with 7+ years of progressive responsibility in managing, deploying, and designing SQL environments are required. Additionally, 10+ years of experience working within enterprise technology teams is preferred. Working knowledge of T-SQL query monitoring and performance analysis. Must have experience securing, monitoring, capacity planning, and implementing SQL environments. Experience with database proxy solutions such as HAProxy or ProxySQL is preferred but optional.


The applicant must show excellent emotional maturity and enjoy working in teams, with the ability to maintain healthy relationships with peers and leadership. Must be willing to occasionally work off hours during maintenance windows and occasionally share the responsibility of providing high availability to 2nd/3rd shift associates if service outages occur.
