We are backed by the investment arm of one of America's largest furniture retailers, although we are independent and proudly building a technology in service of the furniture industry and furniture shoppers.

About the Role

We are seeking a talented and experienced Engineering Manager to lead Scrum teams consisting of backend, frontend, and QA engineers. As the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of site engineering including the services layer, frontend, and API systems. This is a leadership role which requires managing individual contributors and establishing clear goals and growth plans.

What you will do:

1. Team Leadership:

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of engineers and testers, while fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture.
  • Provide guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to team members, enabling their growth and success.
  • Set clear performance expectations, conduct regular performance evaluations, and facilitate effective communication within the team.

2. Technical Strategy and Planning:

  • Collaborate with Engineers to define the technical roadmap, aligning it with business objectives and user requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and innovation in web technologies, frameworks, and architecture.
  • Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and emerging development practices, particularly related to AWS, Node.js, Express, React, Next.js, and MongoDB.

3. Delivery Management:

  • Manage the end-to-end development lifecycle of features and enhancements, ensuring their timely delivery with high quality.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to prioritize tasks, allocate resources effectively, and meet project milestones.
  • Monitor project progress, identify potential risks or bottlenecks, and take proactive measures to address them.

4. Technical Expertise:

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership and guidance to the engineering team, leveraging your expertise in AWS, Node.js, Express, React, Next.js, and MongoDB.
  • Collaborate with the team to design and implement scalable, secure, and performant web and API solutions.
  • Conduct code reviews, ensure adherence to best practices, and foster continuous improvement in code quality and development processes.

5. Collaboration and Communication:

  • Foster effective collaboration between engineers, DevOps, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless integration and delivery.
  • Act as a liaison between technical and non-technical teams, facilitating clear communication of project requirements, progress, and challenges.
  • Promote knowledge sharing, cross-team collaboration, and a culture of transparency and accountability.
What we're looking for:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience of 5+ years as an Engineering Manager or similar leadership role, specifically managing engineering teams for web applications hosted in AWS
  • Solid understanding of both JavaScript and TypeScript.
  • Proficient in Node.js, Express, React, Next.js, and MongoDB.
  • Strong expertise in technologies including Node.js, Express, MongoDB, and related libraries and tools.
  • Solid understanding of AWS services and infrastructure, particularly for web applications.
  • Experience with performance optimization, security best practices, and RESTful API design and development.
  • Proficiency in Agile methodologies, project management tools like Jira
  • Experience with automated code deployment pipelines using CI/CD tools like GitHub Actions
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, with a track record of building and nurturing high-performing teams.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on driving results and delivering exceptional user experiences.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to interact with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Prior experience in startup environments is a plus.
  • Experience with Site Search services like Elastic, Algolia, or similar is highly desired.
