The Strafford Wind Symphony is currently seeking an Artistic Director and Conductor. Strafford Wind Symphony (SWS) is a 55-piece concert band that has performed for over 30 years in NH, ME, and MA venues. Our mission is to provide challenging musical experiences for our members and to support educational and financial assistance to young musicians. SWS is a non-profit 501c3 organization and a member of the Association of Concert Bands (ACB) which covers our ASCAP/BMI obligations. This position is paid and requires:

• Weekly rehearsals September through June in Rochester, NH

• 10-12 performances annually within an hour’s travel from Rochester

• Attendance at monthly Board of Directors’ Meetings Based in Rochester, NH

• Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music or Music Education. MA in conducting preferred.

• 5+ years of experience in band or orchestral conducting.

Skills: Advanced score reading; wide range of knowledge in classic and current band repertoire; understanding of adult musicians in a community organization. Use of music composition software is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Provides artistic leadership for a large ensemble, pulling from both current and classic repertoire.

• Collaborates programming with the Assistant Conductor.

• Works and coordinates with the General Manager, Personnel Mgr., Assistant Conductor, and President of the Board of Directors to present well-rehearsed and interesting performances with the goal to increase our audience base.

• Attends all rehearsals and performances.

• Attends all monthly Board of Directors’ Meetings and reports on current activities, plans, concerns.

• Interfaces with other community outreach programs and musical organizations. i.e. Music in Our Schools programs in March.

• Encourages fundraising during our annual drive.

• Recruits as necessary to fill vacant musical positions.

• Communicates openly and respectfully to all members/musicians.

*Auditions and interviews will take place during Wednesday evening rehearsals. SWS will choose one piece for candidates to prepare ahead of time to conduct. Candidates will also be expected to sight-read a score as part of their audition.*
