The Nursing Internship Program is full-time, 40 hours per week for 10 weeks starting June 3, 2024.

The Nursing Internship Program is designed to provide nursing students the opportunity to gain hands on experience in areas within the nursing field outside of hospital bed-side patient care. During the experience you will get exposure to patient care needs through the healthcare continuum, enrichment opportunities such as the UHG Corporate Headquarters Experience, Day in the Life of a Nurse Series, Enterprise Foundations, networking, and student cohort connections. Nursing interns will be aligned to one of the following areas below (opportunities may vary by market):

Case Management

  • Assist the provider/nursing team with various care coordination activities
  • Collaborates with all key stakeholders; providers, nursing homes/assisted living facilities, PCPs, families, interdisciplinary care teams and any other identified stakeholders
  • Assist with identifying gaps in the HEDIS/Quality measures and communicating these to the provider for resolution. i.e. missing vaccinations, lab work etc.

Utilization Management

  • Provides relevant clinical information to the request and the criteria used for decision-making.
  • Ensures that there is evidence that the UM nurse reviewer documented communications with the requesting provider to validate the presence or absence of clinical information related to the criteria applied
  • Advocate for patients and families as needed to ensure the patient's needs and choices are fully represented and supported by the health care team

Population Health

  • Assess, plan and implement care strategies that are individualized by patient and directed toward the most appropriate, least restrictive level of care
  • Identify and initiate referrals for social service programs; including financial, psychosocial, community and state supportive services
  • Advocate for patients and families as needed to ensure the patient's needs and choices are fully represented and supported by the health care team

Telephonic Nursing

  • Provides nursing support for health service providers over the phone
  • Provide education to patients, deploying best practices and standard workflow in their daily activities
  • Analyze, investigate, and resolve individual care quality, coordination of care, service and access issues

Direct Patient Care

  • Actively participates in the care team to ensure that patient needs and preferences are incorporated into the comprehensive plan of care
  • Performs authorized technical procedures competently (e.g., EKG, phlebotomy, starting/ monitoring IVs, selected laboratory tests, etc.) as may be required in clinical practice area
  • Using population-specific knowledge and clinical expertise, contributes to the continual assessment and effective management of the health needs of assigned patient populations

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited RN Bachelors Degree program with graduation anticipated within 12 months of internship.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the duration of the summer internship program (from June 3 - August 9)
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization (F-1 students with practical training and candidates requiring H-1Bs, TNs, etc. will not be considered)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of clinical terminology
