Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc (HATCI) is looking for a Thermal Systems Engineer at our Proving Grounds in California City, CA.

Summary

The Thermal Systems Vehicle Evaluation Engineer is responsible for developing and performing related testing procedures and performance standards for all Hyundai and Kia Vehicles. Test results are documented and reported to the Engineering managers, HMC, KMC and external customers to initiate further investigation. Whenever possible, evaluation reports will include recommendations for short term remedial action and long-term resolution. The position also requires participation in all thermal system related climate field testing programs as required in order to support the Vehicle Evaluation Group's specific needs. Thermal Systems includes the following vehicle functions: Air Conditioning systems, Heater systems, Powertrain Cooling systems, Body Ventilation systems, Heat reduction loading (solar glass development) and several other peripheral evaluations such as evaluations of fuel odor inside the vehicle in high engine load conditions and similar evaluations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Participate in all related Air Conditioning and Heater System validation testing for HKMC vehicles for North America. This includes field and lab testing.
  • Participate in all related Automatic Temperature Control (FATC) calibration testing and validation for HKMC. The focus of this responsibility is field testing for validation. Lab testing is performed by suppliers and HKMC.
  • Conduct periodic competitive vehicle and technology evaluations. Submit reports as defined by management and customers. Typically these are benchmarking activities that are led by Total Vehicle Evaluation.
  • Perform liaison activities related to thermal systems between internal HATCI customers (Powertrain, NVH) and external customers in accordance with requests from parent company requests.
  • Participate and assist in all Powertrain Cooling System testing and validation for North America.
  • Lead as assigned from the Thermal Systems manager, testing new technologies related to Thermal Systems, such as solar glass, climate controlled seats, heated wiper fluid and new refrigerant technologies.
  • Assist the Material Weathering Facility in setting up and performing any special testing. Such as full vehicle soak tests, correlation comparisons and project improvement tests.
  • Provide basic analysis of Material Failures of test samples at the weathering facility.
  • Assist in planning and monitoring of department budget.
  • Create and present technical reports as assigned.
  • Perform administrative functions such as purchasing requests, timecard, vacation requests, travel requests, etc.
  • Perform additional projects as assigned.
  • Travel up to 40% of time domestically and internationally.

Compensation:

$80,000 - $125,000



Qualifications and Requirements

  • Strong background in vehicle and related systems evaluation
  • Strong technical knowledge of automotive products and the automotive industry
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to analyze problems and set up test matrix to gather data to resolve the issue
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong technical knowledge of automotive heating, air conditioning, powertrain cooling systems and their interrelationship to the total vehicle function
  • Knowledge of Material (plastics) Degradation background and understanding of Material Weathering Test methods
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of experience in Automotive testing.
  • Experience working in culturally diverse team environment

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Office Environment - no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands.
  • Shop Environment - exposure to fuel, compressed air/gas, emissions and exhaust fumes; pinching, tripping, electrical, and chemical hazards; bending and stooping required; must be able to lift up to 75 lbs. and work safely with hand power tools. May work in outdoors or indoors in extremes of weather and temperature. Safety glasses required.
  • Field Environment - Field temperature ranges from -20º F to +160º F; altitude ranges from -300 ft. below sea level to +14,000 ft. above sea level. May require bending and stooping and lifting while removing and attaching 5000 lb. trailers to vehicles, installing instrumentation and repairing vehicle failures. May require operation of vehicles for total of 1000 miles over 2-3 day period. Safety glasses required when working on vehicles.
  • Proving Ground Environment - exposure to weather and temperature extremes - 32ºF to +100ºF ; high winds; exposure to hazardous fuels and oils; exposure to emissions and noise.
