Plastic Injection Mold Maker / Technician

Location: Thomasville, Georgia

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

 Reporting to the Tooling Manager, the Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician preferably has a Journeymen's license or has completed a formal apprenticeship program. The Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician builds, repairs, and maintains: molds, fixtures, gages, and all other tooling in conformance to customer and / or company specifications per control plans, and loads and operates the injection molding machines to meet customer demand. Analyzes specifications, lays out design, consults on tooling designs, set-up and operate CNC and manual machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to make and repair molds, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and custom tools.

Maintains a safe working environment by ensuring compliance with policies, procedures and safety regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Includes, but may not be limited to the following

  • Plastic Injection Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician sets up and operates injection molding equipment; Conducts test runs with completed tools or molds to ensure that parts meet specifications; makes mold and process adjustments as necessary to meet Inspection documents. May set up and run more than one automated mold machine process simultaneously.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician cuts, shapes, and trims materials to specified lengths or shapes, using machine tools, measuring gages and hand tools to complete parts and service molds.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician files, grinds, shims, and adjusts different parts to properly fit them together to ensure and maintain accurate process function.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician fits and assembles parts to make, repair, or modify molds, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician inspects finished molds for surface finishes, smoothness, contour conformity, and molding defects and regularly inspects and plans service and repair work for existing molds.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician lifts, positions, and secures machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician measures, marks, and scribes’ metal or plastic stock to lay out for machining, using instruments such as protractors, micrometers, scribes, and rulers.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician selects metals to be used from a range of metals and alloys, based on properties such as hardness and heat tolerance specific to the molding application.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician sets up and operates conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician sets up and operate drill presses to drill and tap holes in parts for assembly.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician smooths and polishes flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician studies blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for design and fabrication of molds, tools, dies, or assemblies.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Make/Technician verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician visualizes and computes dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician sets up and operation of injection molding machines, CNC machine tools and automation to produce components and assemblies including unloading of machines, mixing of plastic and colorants, and regrind process.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician designs jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of parts or products.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician develops and designs new molds, using computer-aided design software.
  • Plastic Injection Mold Maker/Technician sets pyrometer controls of heat-treating furnaces, and feed or place parts, tools, or assemblies into furnaces to harden.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent education or trade school diploma program
  • 5-years’ minimum experience in the trade; emphasis on small precision assemblies from injection molds
  • Preferred: Journeyman Mold Maker and/ or completion of an apprenticeship (4 years) or advanced manufacturing certificate, followed by at least 5 years' of on-the-job training
  • An ability to communicate effectively in English both in writing and verbally (Preferred)
  • Knowledge/ experience with SolidWorks, MasterCam, and EDM (a Plus)
