GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The Sustainability Manager Leads research and analysis used to develop corporate strategies to ensure implementation of environmental and sustainability plans, strategies, standards, procedures, and systems, designed around zero waste initiatives are met. Responsible for Developing sustainability goals to help align strategies and support the corporate long-term strategic plan. Coordinate with multiple departments to improve the financial viability and sustainability of the recycle and warehousing departments by bringing new ideas and finding new opportunities. This position is responsible for generating revenue from state-wide salvage received through distribution and donation centers, retail stores, outlet stores, and other sources. Responsible for negotiating pricing and securing vendors. Responsible for increasing Landfill diversion and revenue in post-retail operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Oversee sustainability report development, ensuring alignment with company guidelines, trends, stakeholder input & concerns and corporate strategy & directions. This duty is performed quarterly.

2. Design strategies and deliver programs to increase internal and external stakeholder engagement, awareness and commitment to sustainability. This duty is performed monthly.

3. Prepare regular and specialized sustainability program reports and presentations. This duty is performed monthly.

4. Partner with store, donation center and distribution management/staff to streamline and maximize salvage opportunities; locate appropriate vendors. This duty is performed daily.

5. Prepare and maintain files, reports, and other records. This duty is performed daily.

6. Comply with all agency policies, procedures and safety standards and maintain same to meet CARF, Department of Labor, R2, ISO, and other regulatory standards. This duty is performed weekly.

7. Conduct quality control inspections to ensure compliance with salvage SOP's. This duty is performed weekly.

8. Coordinate the recycling of commodities such as textiles, linen, shoes, books, metal, wire, plastics, electronics, toys, computers, cardboard, etc. for revenue generation. This duty is performed daily.

9. Develop revenue and operating budgets to include salvage and recycling. This duty is performed annually.

10. Identify and negotiate pricing with salvage vendors. This duty is performed daily.

11. Coordinate transit with regional and international buyers, keep up-to-date records and manage salvage shipments from multiple sites to ensure a constant flow without backlog. This duty is performed daily.

12. Assist with the development, review and delivery of policies, procedures and training related to waste management and sustainability programs. This duty is performed quarterly.

13. Engage in the community to locate other donated salvage opportunities and negotiate the pick-up of commodity materials. This duty is performed as needed.

14. Serve as the sustainability liaison with internal departments and external partners. This duty is performed as needed.

15. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area; e.g. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc, plus 3 years related experience and/or training, and 12 to 18 months related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy/procedure manuals; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.

Supervises a small group (3-7) of employees, usually of lower classifications. Assigns and checks work; assists and instructs as required and performs same work as those supervised, or closely related work, a portion of the time. Content of the work supervised is of non-technical nature, but presents numerous situations to which policies and precedents must be interpreted and applied.
