General Purpose

Assist the Technical Operations Supervisor with the daily planning and operation of the landfill. Under direction of Lead Operator and other designated personnel, operates various pieces of equipment with demonstrated skill, controls vehicles at the landfill and performs litter control duties. Work is performed in accordance with the instructions received from the General Manager or other designated personnel and is expected to be carried out free from direct supervision, except for the more complicated jobs. The employee is responsible for the efficient operation of equipment and is expected to perform minor servicing and maintenance or refer major problems to the supervisor at the first sign of trouble.

Example of Duties

  • Maintains and operates various heavy equipment including the waste compactor, Waste dozer and Scrapper. This includes but is not limited to daily walk around inspections daily fluid checks, and greasing. Operating them in a safe manner while being observant and fills out any needed documentation.
  • Performs visual inspections of all loads to prevent disposal of unauthorized waste.
  • Enforces landfill safety policy and prohibits salvaging by anyone.
  • Maintains a clean and accessible face operation.
  • Performs needed litter control.
  • Maintains weed control around building and fences.
  • Cleans litter fence when needed.
  • Performs general facility and grounds maintenance work.
  • Performs other job-related work as needed.
  • Blow out and keep equipment clean.
  • Maintain a smooth and debris free access to the face.
  • May assist other personnel when there is no need for heavy equipment operation.
  • Pre and post walk inspections and documentation.
  • Preventative maintenance best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 18 years old
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1 - 8 years of heavy equipment experience required.
  • Possession of a valid Utah driver’s license
  • Any combination of training and experience

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Solid Waste Management Practices concerning the recognition, inspection, notification, dumping, and disposal of hazardous waste to include both solids and liquids.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment repairs schedules and he ability to evaluate complex machinery issues.
  • Landfill disposal standards and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Operate assigned equipment
  • Communicate effectively in both written and verbal form
  • Ability operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently leaving a 15-foot clearance from all vehicles.
  • Ability to record time spent and material used.
  • Ability to work safely and follow safety practices and techniques.
