Laboratory Assistant (Part-Time)

Overview

Our Element Iowa City location has a current opening for a part-time Lab Assistant to join our growing team. The Lab Assistant provides laboratory testing support to microbiologist/molecular scientists and managers. The position will consist of routine work such as general housekeeping, testing preparation, operation of laboratory equipment, and routine maintenance. Special tasks will be assigned by managers or microbiologists/molecular scientists on a daily basis.

This position will require approximately 20 hours per week. The ideal candidate would want to work first shift hours and be okay with weekend shifts (Sundays in particular). All initial training will be completed M-F, and then transition into weekend coverage.

Responsibilities
    Process incoming specimens using proper safety handling guidelines, labeling of plates, using appropriate media, and properly streaking for isolation
  • Preparing for runs including removal of panels from freezers, numbering of panels and tubes, and cracking of tubes
  • Dispensing media using aseptic technique for storage of bacterial specimens
  • Participates in all aspects of testing including subbing, inoculums, pipetting and inoculating panels
  • Calibrates, conducts routine maintenance, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation
  • Complies with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements of the laboratory
Skills / Qualifications
  • Associates Degree in a laboratory science field from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and experience
