Job Description

Job Description

As a hospitalist in a rural community your primary responsibility will be to provide comprehensive medical care to patients admitted to the hospital. This includes diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions, coordinating with specialists when necessary, and ensuring the well-being of your patients during their hospital stay.

Jones Memorial Hospital (JMH), located in beautiful southwestern New York State, is a 49-bed acute care facility serving all of Allegany County, as well as western Steuben County and northern Potter County, PA. Truly a community hospital, JMH is committed to continuously raising quality and safety to higher levels and providing top quality healthcare in a hometown community setting. Jones Memorial is accredited by The Joint Commission.

Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care: You will evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients admitted to the hospital. This may involve managing chronic conditions, addressing acute medical issues, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals. Ability to run procedures is required.
  2. Coordination: Hospitalists often act as a central point of contact for patient care. You'll work closely with nurses, specialists, and other healthcare providers to ensure that patients receive timely and appropriate care.
  3. Shift Work: Hospitalists typically work in shifts, including nights and weekends. This allows for continuity of care for patients throughout their hospital stay.
  4. Emergency Response: In rural areas, hospitalists may be called upon to respond to emergency situations, especially if there is no on-site emergency department. You may need to stabilize patients before they can be transferred to a larger medical facility.
  5. Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the emergency department team, including physicians, nurses, paramedics, and other support staff.  Consult with specialists and arrange for the transfer of patients requiring advanced care to larger facilities if necessary.
  6. Documentation: Maintain accurate and thorough medical records, documenting patient assessments, treatments, and responses to interventions. Complete required documentation for billing and legal purposes in a timely manner.

Benefits of Working in a Rural Community

  1. Community Engagement: Rural communities often have tight-knit populations, and you'll have the opportunity to build strong relationships with both patients and community members.
  2. Work-Life Balance: Rural settings can offer a more relaxed pace of life, with opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping, which can contribute to a better work-life balance.
  3. Variety of Cases: Working in a rural hospital may expose you to a wide variety of cases due to the limited availability of specialists. This can be professionally enriching.
  4. Impactful Work: Your role as a hospitalist in a rural community can have a significant impact on improving access to healthcare and the overall health of the community. A welcoming and supportive team of professionals with a focus on quality of life.
  5. Compensation:  Competitive salary and benefits package – Salary range $70/ hour
  6. Work-Life Balance schedule – 12 hours shifts  – Flexible schedule

Qualifications:

  • Current NY state licensure as a Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Physician Assistant.
  • Previous experience as a Hospitalist is highly desirable.
  • Strong clinical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, rural healthcare environment.
  • Willingness to be on-call and work variable shifts as needed.
  • Dedication to providing high-quality patient care in a rural setting.

Overall, working as an NP or PA Hospitalist in a rural community with outdoor activities can be a unique and fulfilling experience. It allows you to make a meaningful impact on a close-knit community while enjoying the benefits of a slower-paced lifestyle and access to outdoor recreational activities.
