Salary:

Job Summary:    Responsible for the mobile core network, maintenance and repair of cellular base station equipment, Network routers and switches, microwave radios, DC power/battery systems and other equipment associated with the wireless network.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Managing Ericsson’s Packet Switched Network elements and interconnections, including developing and maintaining of these components.
  • Subject Matter Expertise (SME) in specific elements and acting as the internal SME for those, including making recommendations for improvements.
  • Maintain and repair cellular base stations, microwave radios, and DC power systems.
  • Configuration and software version management of the assigned mobile core network elements.
  • Supporting management of the relevant mobile core network element vendors.
  • Supporting Roaming & Carrier Relations to implement new roaming and wholesale agreements, including IREG testing.
  • Work with testing equipment, measuring devices, meters and tools in wiring, repairing, maintaining and testing of the cellular communications system equipment including but not limited to:    
    • Wireless Base Stations UMTS & LTE
    • Microwave radios systems
    • DC power & battery systems
    • Routers & Switches
    • Utilize software-based tools and test equipment.
  • Use various instruments and meters to isolate trouble and facilitate repair in cooperation with other offices and repair forces.
  • Use various hand tools: wrenches, screwdrivers, ratchets, cutters, pliers, wire wrap, punch down, electric drills, etc.
  • Recognizing that job safety is a primary objective in all duties attends and participates in company safety and training meetings.
  • Drives company vehicles including four-wheel drive vehicles and snow cats.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required to fulfill job function or as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum of 5-8 years working in the telecommunications industry designing, integrating, and managing Packet Switched network propositions for e.g. a carrier MNO, MVNO, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Packet Switched network elements, interfaces, and call flows for both 3G/WCDMA and 4G/LTE networks, including SCTP and other protocols. Ability to design and configure mobile data networks.
  • General understanding of Voice SIP / RTP and voice convergence technologies, IMS (including VoLTE and VoWiFi).
  • Demonstrable experience of managing & configuring Ericsson Packet Switched network elements including HSS, GGSN, P-GW, SGSN, S-GW, PCRF & MME.
  • Diameter Signaling, preferably Ericsson DSC (Diameter Signaling Controller) & RADIUS.
  • In-depth understanding of 3GPP, ITU-T and ANSI standards.
  • Understanding of roaming agreements and IR.21, including IREG testing a plus.
  • Lawful Intercept & CALEA requirements in the PS domain.
  • Knowledge of antenna systems, cable management practices and grounding systems
  • Knowledge of telecommunications technology, materials and equipment.
  • Ability to perform close, exacting work that may also involve heavy exertion.
  • Ability to use mechanical and electrical power tools appropriately.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, schedules and accepts responsibility for own activities while working with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain complete confidentiality of system financial information, customer data, and other proprietary confidential information.
  • Ability to exhibit a pleasant personality, professional appearance and demeanor, tact and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of the standards, rules and regulations governing cellular operations.

Education/Experience

Any combination equivalent to the following education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would qualify.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

  • High school diploma. Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, communications, business technology, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Minimum five years progressively responsible experience in cellular operations.
  • Completion of two semester’s credit or at least six months experience in AD/DC and/or RF use or theory.
  • At least two semesters (or equivalent) of specialized training in various phases of cellular industry operations is desirable.


Physical Demands

The physical requirements described are meant to be representative of those that must be met by an employee in order to successfully carry out the essential functions of the position.

  • Strenuous physical work including frequent lifting and moving of heavy objects (up to 100 pounds).
  • Digging, shoveling.
  • Physically demanding work for continuous and lengthy periods of time, often combined with bending, twisting, squatting, reaching, and working on irregular surfaces.
  • Tasks frequently requiring use of upper arm, wrist and hand strength and dexterity.
  • Strength, dexterity, and stamina to stand for long periods of time and to perform manual tasks using heavy hand and power tools.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to hear communications over a cellular device.
  • Ability to get in and out of various types of company vehicles on a recurring basis.

 

Special Demands

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, have a good driving record and be insured under the company’s insurance policy.
  • Must be willing and able to work when safely work outdoors during incriminate weather conditions.
  • May be required to work overtime or on weekends and holidays as needed.
  • May be required to attend out-of-town training and/or meetings requiring travel by car, bus, plane or other means of transportation and overnight stays.

 

Working Environment

Work is performed under the following conditions: Some of the work is performed outside with exposure to extreme weather conditions including heat, rain, snow, cold, and wind.  Incumbents are frequently exposed to noise, dust, fumes, odors, and vibrations and may be exposed to toxic chemicals and solvents such as herbicides and/or pesticides, paints, road paving materials and cleaning materials.  The noise level in the work environment is often loud.  Work will occasionally be performed in confined areas.  Work may be performed independently and may need to be done in somewhat isolated geographic areas.
