STATEMENT OF THE JOB: Under the overall supervision of the Early Childhood Director and the direct supervision of the Center Manager, carries out all duties and responsibilities as related to the transportation of children and maintenance of designated vehicles and facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintain a professional attitude at all times with staff, parents, volunteers and children.
  2. Work with Supervisor in designing bus routes. Drive bus on designated route morning and afternoon five days a week.
  3. Responsible for safe transportation of children as they board, ride and leave the bus and returned to their parents or other authorized adult.
  4. Responsible for the maintenance of buildings, grounds and bus(es) in a professional and timely manner, including, but not limited to:
  • changing air filters in HVAC units
  • monthly fire extinguisher checks
  • watering, mowing, trimming and weed-eating
  • seeing that buses are in good operating condition at all time and for reporting any problems to the direct supervisor
  • Clean and safe environment inside and outside the bus through regular cleaning.
  1. Participate in the required Random Drug and Alcohol Testing for Bus Drivers.
  2. Participate in a combination of classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel instruction training prior to transporting any children. This training involves the following:
  • operating the vehicle in a safe and efficient manner;
  • safely running a fixed route;
  • administering basic first aid in case of an injury;
  • handling emergency situations, including vehicle evacuation procedures;
  • operating special equipment such as a wheelchair lift; assistance devices or special occupant restraints;
  • conducting routine maintenance and safety checks of the vehicle;
  • orientation on the goals and philosophy of Head Start and how they are implemented by the program.
  1. Maintain accurate records regarding their bus and children who are being transported. The record-keeping includes:
  • Accident reports
  • Pre- and post-trip inspections for the operation of the vehicle
  • Regular ongoing maintenance records
  • Contact information for release of a child to a parent or guardian
  • Establish written fixed bus routes and if necessary, alternate routes
  1. Collaborate with the Bus Monitor to teach children safe riding practices and safety procedures on and off the bus.
  2. Maintain their assigned vehicle and ensure that appropriate safety inspections have been completed for its operation as required by state laws.
  3. Must have an annual evaluation that includes an on-board observation of their performance while driving a bus route.
  4. Perform minor repairs, as necessary, to ensure safe facilities.
  5. Responsible for completion of Maintenance/Work requests in a timely manner and submitting completed orders to Supervisor.
  6. Responsible for setting up facility for special activities in a timely manner.
  7. Assist in moving supplies, furniture or equipment as needed.
  8. Responsible for data management of transportation and designated areas.
  9. Assist in the avoidance or appearance of fraud and ensure compliance in the Transportation area and the overall management of the Center.

NON- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Respects confidentiality in all aspects of the Head Start program.
  2. Must be willing to participate in all training designed for professional development.
  3. Able to handle stress, tension and exasperation that contact with many children and adults may bring every day.
  4. May be called upon to administer first aid to children or staff at any time in the program. The incidental nature of this circumstance effectively establishes first aid as a collateral duty, rather than a primary one.
  5. Perform other job-related duties as necessary for the overall operation of the program.

Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Educational Requirements: High school diploma or GED.
  2. Experience Requirements: Three months experience driving a bus or similar size vehicle. Must have a good driving record. Experience in minor repairs, lawn and building maintenance. Basic computer skills.
  3. Physical Requirements:
  • Must be at least 25 years of age.
  • Able to pass tuberculosis screening.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license with a school bus endorsement or be capable of obtaining a commercial driver’s license with a school bus endorsement.
  • Successfully pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam prior to employment and annually thereafter.
  • Successfully pass drug screening prior to employment.
  • Have access to transportation with liability insurance and willing to use vehicle for Agency related travel. Able to travel out of area overnight.
  • Able to hear and communicate orally with children and adults.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Some items may occasionally exceed this limit, use necessary protective equipment and/or get help as needed.
  1. Skill Requirements: Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations. Basic computer skills.
  2. Personal Traits:
  • Be in sympathy with the concepts of the Head Start Program.
  • Able to keep confidential information without inappropriately divulging it.
  • Have planning and organizational abilities to problem solve and provide leadership whenever an emergency occurs.
  • Able to make decisions and work without continual close supervision.
  1. Must be able to pass background checks.

Receive a $1000.00 Bus Driver (CDL) or $500.00 Van Driver New Hire Incentive following a satisfactory 90-day job performance review.

$ 16.50 per hour

Hours of work: 5:30AM -10:00AM / 1:00PM - 4:30PM Break 10:00AM-1:00PM
