Summary:

Produces machined parts by programming, setting up, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine; maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; maintaining equipment and supplies; cycles machine and detects malfunctions in machine operations.

Main Activities/Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for setup and operating CNC machines and installs and adjust collets with proper pressure.
  • Sets up and operates machine on a trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Receives jobs package and verify that the components are drawing revisions and correct.
  • Receives material and loads on bar feeder; adjust feeder bar for proper size of material and performs a dry run without material; verifies material against work order for correct lot number.
  • Performs first piece inspection once setup is completed.
  • Gives first piece to Quality Technician and waits for approval to continue, as well coordinates with Quality department to ensure units comply with specifications.
  • Stops machine to change settings, offsets, and setup according per required machining sequence or to measure parts for conformance to blueprint specifications using precision measuring instruments.
  • Checks parts according per inspection plan.
  • Verifies correct tools against tool sheet and program; sets up any type of tool in the pre-setter and/or machine.
  • Adjusts tools or dyes to meet blueprint specifications and replaces tooling at the machine.
  • Downloads program to the machine, dry run machine with no material and all tools in place.
  • Performs first cut off.
  • Monitors screen pages and machine operation to detect or out of tolerance machining – adjust machine controls or control media; verifies the correct program is running in the machine
  • Takes corrective action to bring units into specification. Red tags units that are out of specification (OOS), reports OOS to quality personnel.
  • Complies with and maintains inspection procedure throughout production run.
  • Instruct CNC Operator on required tasks to keep machine in operation.
  • Notifies CNC Programmer of problems with equipment and or tooling that may cause defects/lost time, and gives updates required for improvements.
  • Recommends process improvements with Supervisor or Manufacturing Engineer to resolve problems.
  • Ensures work area, machine, tooling, and parts are cleaned regularly and free from excess oil deposits.
  • Maintains good quality and production output.
  • Labels parts to send to next operation.
  • production and prototype jobs are setup consistently, timely and accurately.
  • Cleans and assembles all collet assemblies, removes, or replaces fixture, collets, and tools. Inspects old collets and guide bushings.
  • Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

Competencies:

  • General knowledge and understanding of ISO 13485 and FDA 21CFR820 as it pertains to the job preferred, on the job training provided.
  • Ability to make tool offset.
  • Demonstrates ability to streamline processes to increase productivity and quality.
  • Working knowledge of CNC machines; Mechanical aptitude required.
  • Working knowledge of precision measuring equipment and real-world experience with those instruments – including but not limited to calipers, ID / OD micrometers, depth gauges, indicators.
  • Blueprint reading required.
  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of job clearance.
  • Required knowledge of basic math skills to include but not limited to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometry, and algebra for calculating material fabrication.
  • Detail Oriented.
  • English communication skills preferred- reading, writing, and speaking, Spanish a plus.
  • Skilled in setting priorities that move projects through efficiently – achieving customer and quality objectives.
  • Skilled in working independently, following through with assignments with minimal direction.
  • Reasoning skills including but not limited to comparing, classifying, analyzing, and coordinating- minimizing duplication of effort.
  • Knowledgeable in set up of all required tools and in the pre-setter and /or machine and ability to effectively communicate production issues with CNC Operator, Area Set-up Programmer, Area Supervisor, Quality personnel and Production Manager as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • High School or equivalent.
  • Two or more years of related experience.
  • at least 3 years of directly related training and/or experience operating CNC lathe machines in a busy manufacturing setting.
  • Setup experience and skills.
