CSS Inc. seeks to hire a Senior Coastal Resilience Product Development Specialist to join an interdisciplinary research team of contract and federal employees. We are seeking a qualified individual to develop science communication products focused on impacts from coastal inundation, vulnerability, and resilience. The position will work on projects related to sharing data on coastal/climate impacts including sea-level rise, inundation, social and economic vulnerability, and habitat change. Examples of data and information delivery products include story maps, data dashboards or viewers, infographics, archived data, and/or other tools that build upon ongoing coastal resilience related projects. The position will support NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), a nationally recognized scientific research program office that conducts applied research to support marine ecosystem management, conservation, and spatial planning. The candidate will work as part of the Coastal Resilience, Restoration, and Assessment Branch within the Marine Spatial Ecology Division of NCCOS.


The position will require proficiency with GIS (Arc Pro and Arc Online) and python programming. Familiarity with climate change topics, proficiency with geospatial analysis, creating online data visualizations (e.g., publishing data, building story maps or dashboards), and python is essential. Suitable candidates must be able to independently create clear and engaging data visualization products, using non-technical language to convey technical scientific concepts around climate issues and coastal resilience. Suitable candidates must also be able to work effectively with a team of scientists on site and from remote locations, set and meet deadlines, and work independently and complete milestones in a timely manner. The position will be located either in Beaufort, NC or Silver Spring, MD.


Responsibilities:

  • Perform geospatial and geostatistical analyses such as integrating various data sets, aggregating and manipulating data at various spatial scales
  • Develop custom, reproducible geoprocessing workflows to support high-end spatial analysis
  • Develop data visualization applications, informed by needs of end users/clients
  • Organize and input data into databases, maintain accurate detailed records of observations, measurements and results
  • Develop metadata to appropriate NOAA standards
  • Contribute to or lead development of reports and other communication documents (e.g., partner outreach and news items)
  • Set and meet deadlines for completion of work in timely manner
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to relevant projects as directed

Specific Requirements:

  • MS degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required
  • Background in marine science is preferred with familiarity in climate change and coastal impacts
  • Experience with data preparation, workflows and spatial processing, online map and application development
  • Proficient using Python to manipulate data and develop reproducible workflows
  • Proficient with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online
  • Ability to maintain focus on routine and repetitive tasks
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively communicate with NCCOS staff and external partners.
  • Ability to be flexible in responding to changes in schedules and job priorities
  • Able to work in a team environment
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some long days and infrequently on weekends
  • A valid US driver's license
  • Experience with basic computer programs such as excel and word
  • Able to work in the US without sponsorship
