DESCRIPTION: Primarily responsible for training and supervising inmates on construction of the Governor’s Houses. The Governor’s House Program is funded by SD Housing, and provides the opportunity for inmates to learn building trades at the Mike Durfee State Prison and build low-cost, low-maintenance, energy efficient homes for income qualified individuals and families.

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidate must possess excellent customer service and construction trade skills; experience operating fork lift and other equipment; the ability to lift and carry heavy objects; knowledge of building codes and on-the-job safety; and the ability to communicate professionally. Successful candidate must have a High School Diploma or GED and three years of construction experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to build and construct houses. Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license and pass an extensive background check for SD Department of Corrections.

LOCATION: Mike Durfee State Prison, Springfield, SD

STARTING SALARY: Depending on experience and qualifications. Minimum starting pay $26.82 per hour.

BENEFITS: SD Housing pays 100 percent of employees health, dental and vision insurance plus a percentage of family coverage. Option for employer contributed Health Savings Account. Additionally, paid family leave, eleven paid holidays, time of service bonuses and accrual of 15 vacation and 14 sick days annually. Participation in state retirement plan with SD Housing matching 6% and option to contribute to supplemental retirement.
