PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Job Summary

Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work is performed in maintenance and repair on all types of automotive, construction, service vehicles and specialized vehicles and equipment, both gasoline and diesel powered. Work is also performed in tire repair and replacement for all sizes and types of vehicles and equipment. Operates a service truck.

Examples of work performed: repairs and replaces all types and sizes of tires; performs general repair and maintenance work on light and heavy vehicles, with both gasoline and diesel motors. May repair tractors, loaders, backhoes, sanitation trucks, street washers and sweepers, leaf suction machines, bushhogs and side mowers, hydraulics, etc. May rebuild and repair engines, transmissions, rear ends, transaxles, carburetion, fuel injection, repair and replace brakes, clutches, automotive electrics, drive trains. Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as changing oil and filters, tunes engines; maintains shop cleanliness and records and reports. Will drive all types of vehicles and equipment in order to perform repair and maintenance tasks. Subject to call-outs during emergencies. Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the diesel and gasoline mechanic trade

Knowledge of the principles and operation of gasoline and diesel engines

Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of heavy trucks and construction equipment

Knowledge of tire repair methods, materials and equipment

Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions

Ability to perform a variety of repair and maintenance tasks

Ability to use the necessary tools and the required skills

Ability to operate a variety of light and heavy equipment

Ability to follow oral and written instructions

Ability to perform manual labor

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and co-workers


Qualifications

High School education or equivalent is required. A valid Tennessee driver's license is required. Must possess or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within nine (9) months from date of employment. Three years' experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles, heavy equipment and tire repair preferred.


Essential Functions of the Job

Requires the ability to perform physical work, often in somewhat uncomfortable positions such as bent over vehicle fenders, grills and other auto body parts, or in a reclining or stooped, stretched or twisted posture while working on equipment. Frequent lifting is required, possibly up to 100 pounds. May be exposed to weather extremes in emergency repair situations. May be exposed to petroleum products including vehicle/equipment cleaning solvents. Must be able to drive all types of municipal equipment. Subject to call-out during emergencies.
