EXTERNAL ORGANIZAOR:

JOB SUMMARY

The Organizing Coordinator assigns a wide range of duties to the External Organizer. The External Organizer is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating UFW membership growth. They also assist in managing and directing worker activities during the collective bargaining process. This includes developing operational plans that align with the organization's needs, as well as political and Union organizing objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Planning & Administration

1. Collaborates with the Organizer Coordinator & Regional Manager to develop operational plans.

2. Participates in MOR meetings to learn and contribute.

3. Ensures the maintenance of a comprehensive database in assigned companies.

Membership MOBILIZATION

1. Assists in establishing and maintaining a functional and complete worker structure.

2. Directs and participates in the development and training of volunteers.

3. Implements programs aimed at attracting worker participation.

4. Trains worker leadership to effectively conduct their meetings.

5. Identifies and leverages workers' issues, utilizing state and federal agencies when necessary.

6. Assists in building majority support in assigned companies.

7. Learns to conduct NLRB/ALRB elections and card check recognition.

8. Learns to conduct third-party recognition elections.

Contract Development

1. Assists in developing plans with the negotiating committee to prepare for negotiations.

2. Develops industry and area councils to enhance bargaining power.

3. Utilizes innovative strategies to successfully negotiate and sign the first contract.

RELATIONSHIPS

The External Organizer develops and maintains mutually beneficial relationships with management at the assigned companies. They also establish and nurture relationships with the organizing committee, negotiating committee, crew representatives, and membership. Media inquiries are referred to the Regional Manager. Additionally, the External Organizer builds and maintains relationships with religious, political, and community leaders.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY BE ASSIGNED.

Knowledge:

Ability to learn how to use the MOR planning process and use effective training methods for both members and workers. Must have good organizational skills and ability to work independently. Must be familiar with the history and mission of the UFW and be willing to make long-term commitment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual ability in Spanish and English.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions and percentages.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Requires a valid Class “C” Driver’s Must be proficient with MS office applications (Word, Excel, E-mail and Internet).
