Role responsibilities and skills:


● Assist doctors and technicians with various duties including, but not limited to, those listed below.
● Assists with patient appointments, obtain weights and accurate vital signs on patients.
● Assists with collection and preparation of laboratory samples such as blood, fecal, urine, and ear cytology.
● Assist doctors and technicians with radiology procedures.
● Ability to restrain animals in a safe, efficient and compassionate manner during examinations and procedures. Training will be provided as required.
● Assists with prepping patients for surgery and minor procedures.
● Document any changes of a pet’s condition and vital signs appropriately in medical records and notify doctor or veterinary technicians of any unusual medical or behavioral problems.
● Identify and record microchip numbers, tattoos, and other markings in patients’ records.
● Feed, exercise, groom or bathe animals as prescribed by attending veterinarian.
● Excellent communication between all departments of the hospital team.
● Maintain the cleanliness of the hospital including kennels and runs, treatment areas, exam rooms, and surgery suite.
● Ensure soiled laundry is appropriately cleaned, folded and put away on a regular basis throughout the work shift.
● Assists with the care and maintenance of all medical equipment including laboratory machines, surgical packs, anesthesia machines, and any other tools that are essential to daily operations.
● Communicate with clients in a compassionate and professional way.

● Ensure all animals are clean and properly groomed prior to release back to clients care as directed.
● Ensure that supplies are always available and adequately stocked in each exam room and treatment area.
● Accurately dispense medication prescribed by the doctor.
● Perform other duties as assigned by doctors and veterinary technicians to assist in the smooth flow of the daily operation of the hospital.
● May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, bites, and/or scratches.


This is a non-exhaustive list of the essential duties and responsibilities required to be performed by the Veterinary Assistant, with or without a reasonable accommodation. Other duties may be
assigned as necessary for the smooth operation of the clinic.


Requirements:


● High School diploma or GED certificate.
● Flexible schedule including some weekend, evening and holiday shifts.
● Basic computer skills.
● Must be dependable, demonstrate strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn.
● Flexible about schedule as may include some weekend and evening shifts.
● Excellent communication skills, works well with others, a sense of urgency and a desire for continuous improvement.
● Follow OSHA standards by demonstrating proper use of PPE when handling hazardous materials/chemicals/drugs and using medical imaging techniques such as radiology and other diagnostic procedures. Practice best safety precautions to prevent workplace hazards, ie: placing Wet Floor signs in visible area before mopping the floor and in place until the floor is dry and reporting any potential workplace hazards to management.
● Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds or more with assistance.
● Tasks may involve prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking, kneeling, crawling, bending, lifting, balancing, and crouching.
● Ability to work around sick or fractious animals, zoonotic diseases, hazardous materials and cleaning chemicals and anesthetic gas.
