LOCATION: YMCA Camp Wakonda (22237 Lawrence 2080, Ash Grove, MO)

REPORTS TO: Food and Sanitation Coordinator

FLSA STATUS: Seasonal/Part Time

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Prep Cook/Kitchen Assistant aids the Cooks in the overall running of the kitchen. This position sets the tone for the kitchen by role modeling appropriate work ethic, attitude, and team spirit. This person is responsible for: advance prep for meals, salad bars and bakery, cleaning and assisting cooks in meal prep/delivery. They will reduce food waste through the creative use of extras and proper storage, monitors inventory in the storeroom, rotates stock in the walk-in coolers maintain their cleanliness and order, and assists with food deliveries verifying stock as it arrives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist in the day-to-day operations of the camp’s food service.
  2. Prepare food: including, washing, peeling and chopping.
  3. Ability to maintain proper food temperatures and assess condition of food.
  4. Set up food, supplies and utensils for dining hall distribution.
  5. Assist with inventory management.
  6. Communicate changes in inventory to Food and Sanitation Cooridnator
  7. Maintain routine sanitation and upkeep of the kitchen, equipment and facilities.
  8. Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
  9. Clean, sanitize and maintain all food preparation equipment, kitchen floors and food storage areas.
  10. Wash, dry, and fold all kitchen laundry (towels, aprons, etc.)
  11. Wash all utensils, pots and pans, prep and dining hall dishes.
  12. Reduce waste, reuse items and recycle as much as possible.
  13. Adhere to all established health code regulations.
  14. Work as a member of the camp staff team.
  15. Maintain effective communication with administrative camp staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be available between May 17 through August 10.
  2. Must be 16 years old.
    1. Employees under 18 years of age are not permitted to operate, feed, set-up, adjust, repair, or clean any of these machines or their disassembled parts: meat slicers, meat saws, patty forming machines, meat grinders, meat choppers, commercial mixers and certain power-driven bakery machines
  3. Must have or attain Missouri Serve Safe certification prior to camp.
  4. Possess a practical understanding and comprehensive knowledge of food service, storage and cleanliness standards.
  5. Exemplify the YMCA core values of “Caring, Honesty, Respect, & Responsibility.”
  6. Able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate changes in program schedule.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Safety-sensitive position: Apply appropriate safety and emergency procedures.
  2. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to weather and meal prep activities.
  3. Endurance to work with daily exposure to heat, varying temperatures, hot stoves, steam, cleaning products, and on occasion, insects.
  4. Physical ability to respond to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of staff.
  5. Ability to lift to 50 pounds.
  6. Endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, and stretching.
  7. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate kitchen equipment.
  8. Work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities.
