The Crew Leader is responsible for supervising and working with park staff in the performance of fundamental and specialized tasks in maintaining park grounds, buildings, structures, and equipment. Work assignments and supervision are provided by the Park Manager. Annual performance goals will be set for the Crew Leader. The Crew Leader at Sandy Run also oversees maintenance at Bull Run Marina, Fountainhead Regional Park, Webb Nature Sanctuary, and Hemlock Overlook Regional Park.

Hiring Salary Range: $42,365.27 - $46,485.56

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (with illustrative examples of work)

Manage personnel:

  • Plan, schedule, and direct the work assignments of full and part-time employees in the maintenance of multiple park facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Develop and implement training programs for full and part-time maintenance employees.
  • Ensure adherence to fair and equitable employment practices.
  • Interview and hire applicants for part-time maintenance employment.
  • Enforce safety standards.
  • Promote high levels of work performance and employee morale.

Oversee/Perform multiple facilities maintenance:

  • Inspect multiple park facilities for possible improvements, needed repairs, general upkeep, and/or hazards.
  • Troubleshoot, coordinate, and/or conduct minor to extensive repairs of facility/household electrical, plumbing, and mechanical problems.
  • Troubleshoot, coordinate, and/or conduct minor carpentry repairs/projects.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs.
  • Apply paint/stain in both exterior and interior sites.
  • Maintain records of facility maintenance.
  • Oversee maintenance shop housekeeping duties.

Oversee/Perform grounds maintenance:

  • Inspect park grounds for needed improvements, general upkeep, and /or hazards.
  • Coordinate and lead full and part-time maintenance employees on special park development projects.
  • Develop and implement seeding, fertilizing, and mowing schedules for all lawns and other grassy areas.
  • Develop and implement bed preparation, planting, pruning, weeding, and mulching of landscape plants and gardens.
  • Cut dead and/or damaged trees and saw up logs and limbs using chain saws.
  • Pick up ground litter and collect and dispose of litter and trash.
  • Clear and maintain trails.

Oversee/Perform equipment maintenance:

  • Oversee/perform basic vehicle and equipment servicing and maintenance.
  • Operate various types of maintenance equipment.
  • Maintain records of equipment/vehicle service.
  • Maintain equipment part inventories.

Perform miscellaneous maintenance tasks:

  • Clean, organize storage areas and maintenance shop and dispose of debris and perform other maintenance shop housekeeping duties.
  • Supervise full and part-time/seasonal employees and/or volunteers.
  • Run errands to deliver or pick up materials.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (minimum)

Education: Graduation from high school.

Physical: Manual work with strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including lifting, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions in outdoor and maintenance shop settings; will perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions, lift and move items equal to or greater than 80 pounds, climb ladders, use various hand tools, and operate various mechanical equipment.

Experience: Two years' experience in park maintenance work, with mechanical aptitude, or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience which provides:

  • Working knowledge of the methods and materials used in maintenance of park grounds, facilities, and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems and other utility systems with ability to make minor repairs and provide routine servicing.
  • Working knowledge of small engine equipment with ability to perform routine maintenance and make minor repairs.
  • Working knowledge of the safe and proper use of park maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Ability to supervise full and part-time maintenance staff.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain driver's license with safe driving record.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain commercial pesticide applicator certification.
  • Availability for call in emergency situations and to work additional hours during peak operating season including shift work and weekends.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
