JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Director of Surgical Services, the Staff RN (Surgical Services), will plan and supervise the nursing care administered to meet patient care needs in surgery, and provide physicians with optimal services, and delivers perioperative care to surgical patients through the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Communicates with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality. Position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

  1. Thoroughly understand and implement the nursing process.
  2. Continuously assess patients, plans patient care, provides direct and indirect patient care.
  3. Anticipates hemodynamic changes in the patient.
  4. Instructs patient and/or family members on patient care.
  5. Administer medications, blood, blood products, moderate sedation, assists with anesthesia.
  6. Prepares patients for surgery, clipping, prepping, positioning them, etc.
  7. Sets up and maintains the sterile field utilizing proper sterile technique opening & setting up.
  8. Circulates, scrubs, recovers, pre-ops as needed.
  9. Understands basic EKG’s and cardiac monitors.
  10. Participates in Universal Protocol, verifying patient, procedure, and site.
  11. Administers treatments, wound care, and dressings.
  12. Cleans, maintains, or schedules for maintenance, surgical suite and recovery equipment, and associated equipment such as autoclaves, electrocautery units, tourniquets, positioning equipment.
  13. Reports equipment and supplies needs to the Charge Nurse and Director of Surgical Services.
  14. Reports needed maintenance/hazardous conditions to Charge Nurse, Director of Surgical Services, and Maintenance and make an entry into the maintenance log.
  15. Ensures departmental adherence to proper infection control, OSHA, and safety standards.
  16. Coordinates and participates in continuing education.
  17. Responsible for maintaining organizational facilities in accordance with TJC, federal and state, organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  18. Maintains stock and expiration dates in central processing.
  19. Posts cases, putting necessary information in posting book and computer, notifies anesthesia of cases.
  20. Handles and prepares specimens correctly.
  21. Gives complete report when relinquishing care to another area.
  22. Sets up sterile trays and packages for autoclaving, keeping accurate records of autoclave usage and recommended biological testing.
  23. Operates Steris machine, keeping accurate records of Steris usage and weekly biological testing.
  24. Other duties as assigned or necessary.
Requirements:

Minimum Level of Education: Education level equivalent to completion high school, and a graduate of an accredited registered nursing program.

Formal Training: A degree in nursing from an accredited program.

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must have and maintain an unencumbered State of Georgia RN license, BLS, ACLS, and PALS required. ACLS/PALS required within 90 days of date of hire.

Work Experience: Six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Cerner experience a plus.
