Position Summary

The Water Plant Operator (WPO) maintains water and steam chemistry within specification and assists in the safe and efficient operation of the water plant. The WPO carries out all routine water chemistry sampling and analysis, and operates water treatment equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform water chemistry analysis on a routine basis.
  • Maintain logs as assigned.
  • Provide on-the-job training to assigned personnel.
  • Report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of the work and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions.
  • Operate the raw water clarifier, filtered water and demin water systems.
  • Maintains boiler water, circulating water, cooling water and demin water within specification.
  • Ensures chemical storage and day tanks have adequate level; transfers and off loads chemical products.
  • Assist maintenance personnel during the shutdown of any water treatment system.
  • Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant chemistry manual and all technical references, drawings, diagrams and preventive/predictive maintenance records associated with water treatment equipment.
  • Monitor and control effluents within environmental permit limits.
  • The WPO operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision performing duties independently with only general direction given. The WPO encounters recurring work situations of moderate complexity, with occasional variations from the norm. Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines.
  • The WPO must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, and in compliance with all environmental permits at all times. The WPO must effectively communicate information to leaders, managers, and fellow operation and maintenance personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvements. The WPO must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Using the plant qualification system, must qualify as a WPO.
  • The WPO is expected to qualify as a Control Room Operator.
  • Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

Normal office environmental and/or power plant environment out-of-doors work environment. Out-of-doors environment at generating plant work locations includes:

  • Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas and elevations up to 150 feet.
  • Work in all temperatures and climatic conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme.
  • Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment.
  • Performance of duties requires response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week and working irregular shifts.
  • Emergency situations will required the use of a respirator and climbing stairs to reach safety shelters.
  • Establish facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted.
  • Contact lenses are not permitted except for specific medical reasons.
  • Substantial footwear must be worn in accordance with the current Safety Shoe Policy.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school or GED and 6 months experience in an operations or maintenance position or Associates Degree in Process Operator, Industrial Technology or a related field
  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred:

  • Trade school, military service or technical training schools preferred.
  • 6 months experience in power plant or 6 months experience as a water plant operator
  • Craft experience in an industrial setting.
  • Strong aptitude in math, mechanical/electrical ability and production control.
  • Excellent communication and team skills
  • Demonstrate skills in the use of tools, test equipment and calibration appliances

Physical Requirements

  • Physical requirements include working on feet for 12-hour periods, stair and ladder climbing, routine lifting 50 pounds, and heavy cleanup work. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air purifying respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • This job requires the ability to climb vertical access ladders and stairwells, carry up to 50 pounds and to see, hear, walk and talk effectively. Must be able to wear an air purifying respirator and use other safety equipment as required.
