Under the general direction of the Pathologist or Laboratory Manager, performs immunohistochemical stains and all other special procedures as required. This individual will work in the Histology Laboratory within the Pathology Labs Department, performing a variety of histological techniques (accessioning, trimming/grossing, decalcification if needed, tissue processing, embedding of blocks into paraffin, sectioning of paraffin-embedded blocks and H&E staining), bagging residual tissues for archiving, filing slides and paraffin blocks and database entries. Other lab duties include equipment maintenance (H&E stainer set-up and tissue processor reagent change) and ordering supplies and reagents. We need an individual who understands the importance of accuracy in our work.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine tasks related to fixation and processing of specimens.
  • Cuts, prepares, and stains slides from histology specimens
  • Correctly prepares special stains and solutions
  • Operates and evaluates equipment and reagent systems.
  • Maintains equipment with documentation and reports repairs to manager.
  • Also maintains logbooks and Block and slide files.
  • Assists Pathologist in any area of histology sections.
  • Writes and updates evaluation reports as well as procedures using NCCLS format.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

  • Minimum (12) twelve months of experience as histologic technician or completion of the 12 month Histology training. Other histological skills such as grossing, tissue processing, embedding, and staining are required.
  • Good computer skills and a working knowledge of Word and Excel.
  • Able to work in a team environment.
  • Must possess excellent communication and organizational skills.

Education

  • Associate Degree in Science. License, Certification, Registration

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to perform all special stains used in the routine practice of pathology.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Previous experience with lab information systems.
  • Must be an independent self-motivated individual proficient in histology and related applications.
  • Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
