Job Description
Overview
The Registered Nurse will provide nursing care to offenders (routine, chronic and emergency care), maintaining continuity of care from admission to discharge.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Standard of care is achieved through a multitude of services to include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.
  • Document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality and interfacing with other departments on an as-needed basis.
  • Possess the ability to delegate tasks and workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned.
  • Capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
  • To provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Safe medication administration following DOC policy.
  • Provide employee health services in accordance with policy.
  • ACA standards of care, Health Services guidelines and policies, Operational policies and procedures are followed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing program.
  • Virginia State License, or eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing based on the emergency provision issued in 2020.
  • Certified in Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers with current certification from an approved source.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of evidence-based principles and practices of professional nursing and skills to perform assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to make competent decisions, perform physical examinations, develop care plans, document provided services and carry out prescribed orders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in accordance with dialogic practices.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform complete assignments, implement nursing guidelines, utilize established nursing evaluation tools, and evaluate institutional patients within the Department of Corrections.
  • Knowledge of medication use, actions and side effects.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment.
  • Prefer previous experience working with mental health patients.
  • Prefer experience in acute care and/or community health settings (at least one year).
