The Tennyson Center for Children is in search of a Youth Treatment Counselor—to help kids and families who may otherwise be forgotten! Job Summary and Purpose

The Youth Treatment Counselor (YTC) is responsible for supporting children and adolescents ages 5-18 years old in the day treatment, school-based program that fosters resilience and healing, informed by best practices and a deep understanding of trauma informed care. The school based YTC is responsible for the supervision, engagement and support of children and adolescents in the school setting by providing structure, routine and social and emotional support that align with the agency values, individual therapeutic treatment goals and a child’s IEP.  A successful YTC will have prior experience working with children and adolescents and/or a willingness to learn and implement the tenants of trauma informed care and therapeutic intervention strategies.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist children in working towards self-directed treatment goals and IEP goals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external treatment team on progress and barriers as displayed in the school-based setting.
  • Provide clean, safe, and therapeutic learning environments by providing one on one tutoring, small group instruction, and maintenance of student engagement in academic and social emotional learning.
  • Follows all plans and directives from the interdisciplinary team; including but not limited to, the clients treatment plan, IEP, individualized crisis management plan and safety plan.
  • Consistently implements positive behavior supports through a strengths-based lens.
  • Completes required documentation in a timely and detailed manner.
  • Completes required trainings as directed by Supervisor or Manager.
  • Provide basic personal care/ADL support as needed or directed by a child’s treatment plan.
  • Act as a mentor to the children through problem solving and role modeling.


Other Job Functions

  • Participate in child meetings as requested by the supervisor.
  • Participate in team and community meetings at the request of supervisor.
  • Utilize trauma informed therapeutic interventions for behavior management (both verbal and non-verbal) and physical managements as a last resort when imminent safety is at risk.


Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 20/50 lbs. or more.
  • Must be able to assume and maintain a variety of postures such as kneeling, squatting, crawling, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform or assist with physical behavioral interventions.


Working Conditions

  • In person on campus work/school and treatment environment.
  • Potential for loud, high-energy environment.
  • Field trip activities in the community setting.
  • Full time/Part Time opportunities available.
  • Most of the work will occur on campus in the school-based setting. May require some work in residential setting.
  • Casual work attire.


Minimum Qualifications

  • BA degree in a Human Services field (preferred, but not required), but an equivalent combination of education and experience IS required.
  • Must be willing to contribute to a positive home environment for children and collaborative working relationships with TCC staff. 
  • Experience in an educational setting with children K-12 who have experienced significant adversity, and who may have an intellectual or developmental disability is preferred.
  • All candidates must have or qualify to obtain a current Colorado driver’s license (Must obtain license within 30 days of employment).
  • All positions require a criminal CBI background check, FBI fingerprint check, State of CO child abuse check, DMV driving record check, pre-employment drug test, pre-employment physical, academic credential verification, and reference check. 
  • Motivation to obtain specialized training that would enhance your daily work and professional development preferred. 
  • Must be willing to complete training in physical behavior intervention strategies.
  • QMAP through an approved state training entity preferred but not required. Applicant will be required to take training with an approved entity upon hired.


All positions require the successful completion of a criminal CBI background check, FBI fingerprint check, State of CO child abuse check (TRAILS), DMV driving record check, pre-employment drug test, pre-employment physical, academic credential verification, and reference check.
