Position Overview

The Senior Technician will be responsible for performing high complexity laboratory testing on patient specimens, interpreting and reporting patient results, performing quality control and quality assurance procedures, assisting Laboratory leadership with advanced laboratory duties, and complying with all applicable local, state, and federal laboratory requirements. The Senior Technician will continually display excellent initiative in all aspects of their work, contribute to projects and discussions in addition to daily laboratory testing and consistently performing to high standards. Leadership is demonstrated in technical troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and processes as well as laboratory quality improvements, health and safety, and training of laboratory staff.

This role is located at our PreventionGenetics laboratory in Marshfield, WI. The training for this role is 8 weeks Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm. After training, the shift options are:
  • Saturday - Tuesday, 12:00pm - 10:30pm shift
  • Tuesday - Friday 12pm-10:30pm
  • Sunday-Thursday 6:00am-2:30pm
  • Wednesday-Friday, every third Sat/Sun/T 4x10
  • Tues - Sat 6:00am - 2:30pm
Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Ability to work independently on most daily tasks including assigned complex laboratory procedures.
  • Model high productivity, quality, and TAT behaviors.

  • Ability to determine appropriate time allocation between daily test processing needs and project needs in a high quality, efficient and effective manner with minimal direction.
  • Maintain stringent standards for quality by investigating, correcting, and documenting any issues which might adversely impact the quality of test results and/or employee safety, and communicating these to the appropriate management representatives.
  • Identify potential problems, determine potential solutions, and take appropriate action in order to maintain a high level of quality in test processes and results.
  • Achieves and maintains competency on required high complexity laboratory tasks.
  • Participates in laboratory competency assessments of department employees.
  • Maintain stringent standards for safety by investigating, correcting, and documenting any issues which might adversely impact employee safety, and communicating these to the appropriate management and EHS representatives.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment and safety requirements.
  • Support and comply with the company's Quality Management System policies and procedures.
  • With supervisors, lead writing and modifying laboratory SOPs in order to maintain a high level of quality in test processes and results.
  • Understand the various laboratory equipment and reagents used within assigned department.
  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment; including blades, strainers, and pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • Assist with research and implementation of new high complexity technology and procedures.
  • Work with supply vendors for troubleshooting.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies by performing basic preventative maintenance and maintaining quality assurance records.
  • Proficient in using software associated with laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to plan and communicate desired software improvements.
  • Maintain a clean work area in accordance with standard laboratory practice and procedures.
  • Plan and execute training of new technicians. Ability to mentor and coach. Willingness to explore different training methods according to learning styles of technicians.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients and colleagues by using appropriate interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
  • Participate in continuing education and staff meetings. Responsible for own professional development.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined:
    • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • 3+ years of high complexity testing experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated strong professionalism and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated intermediate level project management skills.
  • Demonstrated strong technical skills and professional working knowledge of job industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Professional working knowledge of local, state, and federal laboratory regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
    • For degrees not in those listed above: 90 semester hours which must include 16 semester hours in chemistry (6 of which must be in inorganic chemistry); 16 semester hours in biology courses; and 3 semester hours of math.
  • 5+ years of high complexity testing experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Possession of active ASCP certification in QLS, MLS, MLT, or MB.
  • Experience with laboratory automation.
  • Experience working with laboratory information systems.
  • Experience in molecular testing.


Salary Range:

$45,000.00 - $72,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Marshfield on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
