JOB DESCRIPTION

Assist mechanics with major mechanical repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment owned and operated by the SWDA, using standard practices and equipment of the automotive trade. Operates some heavy equipment. Must be able to train other mechanics and lend support when called upon. Must be able to supervise mechanics, mechanic helpers and laborers working non-standard hours.

Full Time: $24.29 - $39.78 Hourly Rate

Essential Job Functions:
Automotive Repair and Maintenance
  • Tunes engines including testing/cleaning/replacement of spark plugs, adjusting timing, valves, carburetors, fuel injectors, and replacement of ignitions systems.
  • Assist mechanic in removing and disassembling major units such as engine, transmission, differential; inspects parts for wear, and reassembles.
  • Repairs and replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, and bearings.
  • Overhauls and replaces carburetors, generators, radiators, alternators, starters, distributors and water pumps, and fuel injection pumps.
  • Rewires ignition system, lights and instrument panel.
  • Turns drums, realigns and adjusts brakes, aligns front end, repairs or replaces shock absorbers.
  • Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs or repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
  • Troubleshoots hydraulic system and replace hydraulic pumps and hydraulic cylinders.
  • Check and repair electric, pressurized and air operated power take off systems.
  • Assemble hydraulic hose and replace when necessary.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electric systems.
  • Capable of using computer diagnostic equipment on engines.
  • Must be capable of checking and replacing turbo chargers.
  • Capable of diagnosing and repairing air brake systems and air brakes.
  • Experience in checking and repairing air conditioning systems.
  • Capable of repairing refuse bodies and related hydraulic systems.
Heavy Equipment Repair and Maintenance
  • Analyzes malfunctions, and repairs, rebuilds and maintains heavy construction equipment such as motor graders, backhoes, bulldozers, landfill compactors, etc.
  • Assist mechanics in replacing defective engines and subassemblies.
  • Assists with replacing or repairing major components, attachments or implements such as blades, tracks compressors, etc.
Miscellaneous
  • Welds to repair broken or cracked frames, bars, plates, and other metal objects on machinery. Fills holes and builds up metal parts.
  • Replaces batteries, hydraulic fluid, oil, antifreeze/coolant, etc.
  • Repairs or replaces tires.
  • Performs related mechanic duties as required.
  • Performs various duties including operation of equipment and some manual labor as requested by mechanic.
  • Tests repaired equipment to ensure operating efficiency.

Education, Experience and Special Requirements:
  • Have a valid driver’s license with a minimum Class B CDL; Class A preferred.
  • Considerable experience in operating specialized landfill equipment.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in performing the full range of operations with fifth wheel tractor /trailer trucks, bulldozer, landfill compactor, rubber tire loader, grinder, windrow turner and other types of heavy equipment.
  • Possesses communication skills to promote the SWDA’s policy of good will to the general public at the landfill.
  • Willing to work non-standard hours when necessary.
  • Willing to provide personal hand tools.
  • Willing to travel to pick up parts and materials out of area.
Physical Requirements:
  • See well enough to read regular print and numbers without error or transposition and inspect small parts.
  • Hear well enough to talk on telephone, to determine mechanical problems and respond to verbal communication.
  • Speak clearly enough to communicate information in a polite, courteous manner.
  • Safely operate assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Constantly using vision and hearing when reading monitors, being aware of surroundings and listening to equipment, traffic and alarms.
  • Body mobility to perform maintenance and operate various types of equipment; Body movement of mobility to bend, move, stand, and lift; Physical dexterity sufficient to operate levers, gears, etc.
  • Use of hands and fingers to write, perform manual labor and use with tools.
  • Ability to lift, carry and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequently standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and climbing when performing daily tasks and monitoring equipment; bending to connect parts or use tools and balancing when mounting and dismounting heavy equipment; Frequently pushing/pulling equipment, reaching for of handling tools and supplies.
  • Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as extreme heat or extreme cold, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
