Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
The Electrician Journeyman will be responsible for performing duties in one or more electrical
specialties, at a journeyman (skilled) level, such as installing and repairing wiring, electrical fixtures,
apparatus and control equipment.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
· May plan new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future
maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with
specifications and local electrical codes.
· May prepare sketches showing the location of wiring and equipment, or follow diagrams or
blueprints, ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring.
· Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit, using such tools as
hacksaw, pipe threader, and conduit bender.
· May splice wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads with knives or pliers, twisting or
soldering wires, and applying tape or terminal caps.
· Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment, using hand tools.
· May install control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays, and circuit breaker
panels, fastening in place with screws or bolts, using hand tools and power tools.
· Connects power cables to equipment, such as electric range or motor, and installs grounding
leads.
· Test circuit continuity to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using testing
instruments, such as an ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope.
· Observe the functioning of installed equipment or system to determine hazards and need for
adjustments, relocation, or replacement. May repair faulty equipment or systems.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of apprenticeship program required. Usually must be licensed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES:
· Rate information using personal judgment or standards that can be measured or checked.
· Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy.
· Perform a variety of duties, which may change often.
· Use reason and logic.
· Perform arithmetical operations rapidly and accurately.
· See detail in objects or drawings, and recognize slight differences in shapes or shadings.
· Picture flat drawings as 3-dimensional objects.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments with possible exposure to noise, dust,
fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, moving objects, sharp edges, and
in all types of weather and temperature conditions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Manual dexterity, sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods.
· Frequent climbing stairs/ladders, bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, reaching and crouching.
· Occasional work on ladders, scaffolding, or high structures.
· Visual acuity to read printed and electronic documents.
· Hearing capacity to receive, perceive, and react to common construction environment auditory
stimuli
· Lifting and exerting force up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds of lifting/force frequently
, and up to 10 pounds of lifting/force constantly to move objects.
· Frequent driving of motor vehicles.
