Job Title: Crisis Counselor

Home Office: Vienna, IL; Anna, IL; Cairo, IL; or Golconda, IL. Location is dependent on nearest to home residence.

Area of Focus: Behavioral Health

Program(s): Crisis Response and Intervention Services program (590) - The Crisis Response and Intervention Services, which are available 24/7, help people of all ages deal with immediate stressors, minimize the negative effects of physical or mental health challenges, and cope with a loss of functioning in any area of life.

Immediate Supervisor: Program Coordinator

Hours of Work: Full-time 40 hours per week; 8:30am-4:30pm

Minimum Qualifications for Crisis Counselor: Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or related field. Qualifies as a Mental Health Professional (MHP).

Skills & Knowledge for Crisis Counselor: Skills in the delivery of crisis support services; knowledge of local health and human services resources; excellent written and oral communication skills; basic computer skills; ability to navigate enhanced phone system.

Special Requirements for Crisis Counselor: Participation in after-hours crisis call rotation is required; must be 21 years of age or older; travel to all agency sites when appropriate; must complete and maintain the required registry clearance and criminal fingerprint background checks; maintain First aid & CPR certification; must have a valid driver’s license and proof of vehicle liability insurance.

Crisis Counselor Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides crisis intervention to stabilize consumer’s condition by utilizing short-term crisis intervention techniques and referrals to other support services.
  • Utilizes approved screening and assessment tools to evaluate the level of risk for individuals presenting in mental health crisis and makes informed recommendations to the on-call QMHP regarding needed level of care.
  • Collaborate with emergency services, law enforcement, and medical professionals to ensure a seamless and integrated response to crisis situations.
  • Develops safety plans collaboratively with clients to leverage natural supports, ensure ongoing support, address environmental safety, and facilitate access to necessary resources.
  • Facilitates communication externally and across agency staff/applicable programs to ensure continuity of care for individuals presenting in crisis services.
  • Provides timely phone and in-person follow-up with individuals, families, and inpatient systems; assesses the efficacy of the developed safety plan and makes updates as needed.
  • Serves as the point of contact between Arrowleaf and inpatient facilities to exchange information and develop a plan of care following discharge including, but not limited to counseling and psychiatric linkage.
  • Provides comprehensive consumer care and case management services, onsite and offsite as identified by client needs, including access to transportation services, state and federal entitlements, medical care, psychiatric care, housing, and other basic needs to support stabilization and reduce re-entry into crisis.
    Conducts outreach to individuals who are in or at-risk of entering crisis systems of care in an effort to assess for access barriers and engage them into treatment and other stabilization supports.
