The Instrumentation Engineer is the site subject matter expert (SME) for process instrumentation. They will have the ability to specify, troubleshoot, and supervise the installation, maintenance, and repair of instruments which are key to our operation. This includes a wide range of instrumentation including density meters, pH probes, level transmitters, pressure transmitters, flow meters, control valves, and related equipment. They will work independently and with other plant personnel to ensure adequate preventive, predictive, and routine maintenance tasks are performed properly. All tasks will be performed while supporting the policies, goals, and objectives of the company.

The Instrumentation Engineer is also an integral part of ensuring our capital projects are utilizing and adhering to our instrumentation standards.

Essential Duties:

  • Perform examinations of work areas and monitor compliance with MSHA regulations and company policies.
  • Review and optimize existing site standards relevant to process instrumentation and develop a lifecycle program including a preventative maintenance/calibration/obsolescence plan for all site instrumentation.
  • Work with site technicians and contractors to properly install and wire instruments to MP specifications and industry standards.
  • Work with the MP Process Engineering, Process Controls, and Maintenance teams to diagnose and troubleshoot process control issues.
  • Diagnose, isolate, and coordinate repair of low voltage instrumentation with the MP Maintenance team and suppliers including the replacement and adjustment of components, integral units, motors, controls, and other instruments provided in vendor packages.
  • Work with the MP Projects team as the site instrumentation SME to provide input and clarifications for capital projects. This includes review of project specifications, P&IDs, instrument datasheets, instrumentation location drawings, loop diagrams, I/O lists, and instrument manuals as required to ensure consistency across our site.
  • Work to update and organize the documentation associated with instrumentation including instrument datasheets, calibration records, and other relevant documents.
  • Work with the Maintenance group to develop, maintain, and utilize the Asset Management System.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or other certification as an Instrumentation Technician or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of experience in a chemical plant, heavy industrial, or mining environment, including hands-on experience with calibration and maintenance of instrumentation.
  • Ability to specify instrumentation used in various applications and environments.
  • Experience with DCS and PLC control systems.
  • Experience with reliability-based maintenance.

Desired Qualities:

  • Ability to troubleshoot PLC programs, simulate signals, calibrate instruments.
  • Ability to work in teams with strong collaboration skills.
  • Experience with large capital project engineering efforts (instrumentation > $1M).
  • Experience with Asset Management Systems.
  • Experience with Document Management Systems.
  • Good verbal and written skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to learn new duties.
  • Ability to complete a task with minimal supervision.
  • Valid Driver’s License required to drive company vehicles on property.

The expected pay rate is $120,000 to $150,000. The actual pay rate offered may vary based on multiple factors including, but not limited to experience, knowledge, skills, and/or location

Employee must pass a full-face respiratory fit test. Employee must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work in PPE level C.
