Key Job Elements

• Provides direction to designers and drafters in the creation and modification of engineering drawings and models;
• Supports production by diagnosing and solving problems with materials and processes to maintain or improve quality;
• Leads design reviews for assigned systems and participates in reviews for other systems; works with vendors and suppliers to specify new components and select appropriate components for designs; collaborates with engineers of other disciplines to integrate components into higher-level machine designs;
• Supports operations and service organizations in implementing and maintaining product through life cycle; works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and supporting functions to identify and address any issues affecting productivity and quality;
• Responsible for new product development, manufacturing processes, and assembly methods; utilizes data to plan and strategize countermeasures for equipment and process issues;
• Develops, writes, and coordinates Design Change Requests (DCR) and Manufacturing Change Requests (MCR) processes;
• Remains current on engineering resources and new products/processes; completes assigned Required Learning modules;
• Conducts testing and inspections at manufacturing and customer sites as required;
• Communicates with supply chain to purchase necessary components;
• Leads and manages projects, trains engineers and team members to ensure other functions meet appropriate specifications;
• Performs additional job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Education / Training

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

Qualifications and Experience

• Experience in manufacturing, transportation, and/or machinery industries; hand tools experience; some engineering experience (mechanical/electrical);
• Competent in engineering design/CAD software; able to perform standard engineering design calculations (stress, strain, heat transfer, pipe flows, etc.);
• Knowledge of diesel engines and engine components; locomotive engineering background preferred; shop level locomotive experience beneficial;
• Knowledge of applied mechanics, vibrations, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and manufacturing techniques;
• Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software; ability to accurately design, CAD and check a project with minimal supervision;
• Proficiency in computer programs relevant to assigned position, e.g., Matlab, PSIM, PLEX, NX Unigraphics, SAP, ERP LN 10.7, BAAN ERP, FEA, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD 2D, and Progress Rails specific programs and applications;
• Ability to read and understand specification and standards documents; proficient in interpreting and creating engineering drawings;
• Experience with project estimating and order management;
• Strong familiarity with rail standards;
• Communication skills (both oral and written), multi-tasking, and organizational skills;
• Strong attention to detail; strong problem solving, investigative and collaborative skills;
• High level of interpersonal skills; ability to work together in a team environment;
• Proficiency with MS Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) MS Teams and/or Cisco WebEx.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions
• Strength – Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial
environment. Frequent sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium-level lifting (up to 30 pounds);
• Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment;
• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;
• Work Environment – Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE;
• Emotional Demands –Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires attention to detail while sustaining very high standards;
• Safety – Position is not safety sensitive but requires the use of all PPE adherence to Safety Policies (blue flag etc) when working in the field or industrial areas.
