Job Description
Summary of Essential Responsibilities
The purpose of this classification is to operate construction equipment and to perform semi-skilled and manual labor for assigned road construction, maintenance and repair projects. Positions in this class work on a crew engaged in the maintenance and repair of County roads, bridges, right of way, street signs, and other assigned structures; and operate a wide variety of heavy and light construction equipment such as excavators, boom axes, rollers, graders, etc. Performs related work as required.
Essential Responsibilities and Functions
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. Performs a combination of equipment operation and manual and semi-skilled labor for the purpose of building, maintaining and repairing County roads, streets, bridges, related structures and right of way. Assigned project work includes repairing, maintaining and constructing roads and bridges; erecting, maintaining and repairing street signs or other traffic markings and right of way structures; patching potholes; grading roads; sweeping and clearing roads and right of way; trimming trees and brush, mowing grass, spraying herbicides, pouring concrete, etc.
Uses a variety of heavy and light construction equipment, trucks and hand & power tools to perform assigned duties including backhoes, excavators, bulldozers, graders, rollers, chippers, tractors, mowers, water trucks, boom trucks, dump trucks, track loaders, cement and asphalt cutters, pipe wrenches, pick axes, etc.
Picks up and transports materials, tools and supplies. Cleans and washes equipment and tools. Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on tools, equipment and vehicles, such as changing oil and tires. Notifies supervisor of needed replacements and repairs.
Flags and directs traffic, places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public. Follows safety practices and wears protective gear.
Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
The minimum qualifications are:
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by five months of experience operating heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).

Requires the ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, or summarize data/information. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.
Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
Requires the ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and/or rebuild equipment, machinery, or objects, requiring adherence to prescribed standards and specifications.
Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of the same equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments.
Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.
Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgement to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Requires the ability to exercise judgement, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 lbs); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 lbs).
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cures or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, or traffic hazards.
