Summary of Position:

At Civitas, a Lead Field Environmental Specialist is a subject-matter expert and plays a crucial role in ensuring oil and gas operations are conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. This specific role is responsible for complex environmental compliance and conducting in-depth environmental site assessments following accidental releases, compiling findings, reporting details to EHS office staff, and initiating cleanup operations.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Respond to environmental events and incidents.
  • Conduct in-depth environmental site assessments and compilation of incident details.
  • Prepare written, oral, tabular, and graphic reports summarizing details.
  • Manage spill response and cleanup efforts while providing guidance, mentorship, and support to field crews to ensure efficient and effective operations.
  • Provide field oversite for the installation of soil borings and groundwater monitoring wells.
  • Responsible for working with EHS leadership to develop, update, and communicate changes to current efforts and/or best practices relating to environmental compliance and stewardship.
  • Follow safe operating practices and ensure compliance with Civitas Environment, Safety & Regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee communications with regulatory authorities to acquire information on all environmental issues, technologies, and regulations.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of training and information programs associated with emergency response.
  • Assist with field incident reporting and data entry as part of the EHS Incident On-Call Team
  • Assure work performed adheres to Civitas’ standards.
  • Creating solid working relationships with internal teams.
  • Participate in and potentially lead field Root Cause Analyses for environmental events.
  • Work with and direct field environmental consultants and subcontractors as needed.
  • Identify training and development opportunities for environmental team members to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies


  • Strong understanding of local, state, and federal environmental regulations and standards relevant to the oil and gas industry
  • Knowledge of EIA processes and methodologies to assess and mitigate the environmental impact of operations.
  • Familiarity with sustainable practices, including emissions reduction, waste management, and energy efficiency, to minimize environmental footprint of oil and gas activities.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and software to interpret environmental data and trends.
  • Proven leadership skills, including leading teams of environmental specialists and providing guidance on environmental compliance and coordinated activities.
  • Established history of conducting environmental site assessments.
  • Proven track record in managing environmental cleanups.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.


Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, Geology, Ecology, or a related discipline required; or minimum of 10 years of operational field experience in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum of 8 years of environmental assessment, monitoring, and compliance experience with a detailed focus on upstream oil and gas operations.


Travel Requirements:

  • Work is performed at a CIVI location M-Thurs with an option to work remotely on Friday.
  • On-call and emergency response required as necessary, including nights and weekends.
  • Schedule: traditional 40-hour workweek or alternative schedule of 9 hour works days M-Thurs and 4-hour workdays Friday.
  • Travel is required to the Civitas field locations and work sites.

Base Pay Range: $126,500 - $137,100
